Super Mario Brothers dethroned as best seller

It was bound to happen sooner or later, so don’t feel bad. Can you guess what game dethroned good ol’ Mario? Here’s a hint:

Well, it’s not much of a hint since the video turns into a dead giveaway ten seconds after it starts. Hey, at least you know what game toppled Super Mario Brothers as the best selling video game of all time.
Here’s an excerpt from Yahoo! Games’ Ben Silverman’s story “Wii Sports is best-selling game ever”:
According to game-tracking website VGChartz, sales of Nintendo’s pop-culture phenom Wii Sports have surpassed those of legendary Super Mario Bros., making the breakout Wii …read more

Gordon Freeman in Mario Land #2

Okay, okay, wait! Before you bash my head in with that axe after showing you a bad video about Gordon Freeman’s adventure in the world of Super Mario Brothers, I want you to take a look at these videos and tell me which is better:

Well, regardless of which video you choose, one thing’s for certain: They’re both better than the video I showed you in my previous posting, Gordon Freeman in Mario Land.
My only beef with the guys who did the modifications is the way they presented the world of Super Mario Brothers. Come on! The game Super Mario Brothers …read more

Gordon Freeman in Mario Land

Ever heard of crossovers? In comic books, sure, crossovers are a dime a dozen. In the past dozen or so years, we’ve seen crossovers within the same universe, like Superman versus Lobo for the DC Universe and Spiderman versus The Hulk in the Marvel Universe, and between universes, such as the DC versus Marvel crossover, which has resulted in the creation of the Amalgam Universe.
Waitaminute! This blog isn’t about comic books! Duh! It’s about retro and classic video games. So where are the crossovers in the video gaming realm? Believe it or not, the most well known crossover in this …read more

Even students are into the Mario Christmas spirit

Here’s a simple video made by Evan Ferguson of Australia for his class:

Not too shabby for a student. I’m sure Santa Claus got the surprise of his jolly life.
You’re probably sick of Super Mario Brothers-themed Christmas postings, but for those who missed the first two, here are the links:
Have a very Mario Christmas!
Have a very Mario Christmas, too!
Oh, and go check out Evan’s other video, “A newb’s first linerider!”

Have a very Mario Christmas, too!

Here’s another take on the Super Mario Brothers theme this Christmas:

Cool, eh? Apparently, some guy and his co-workers wanted to surprise their manager with a great Christmas theme. I don’t know why they chose Super Mario Brothers. Maybe their manager’s a retro gaming fanatic.
If you want to take a gander at the other photographs, hie on over to Zekira’s Photobucket. Don’t like to view the slideshow, view the thumbnails.
Oh, in case you missed my Christmas greeting, Have a very Mario Christmas!

Have a very Mario Christmas!

Yes, I know, it’s not very original. The use of the name Mario—in place of Merry—is probably as old as the video game that spawned the pudgy red jumper-clad plumber. I just thought it proper to use the line for this very festive occasion, especially since this blog is about classic and retro gaming, and Mario is a video game icon every generation from the 80s to the present can recognize.
Of course, before writing this piece, I scoured the Internet for a good photo to go with the “Have a very Mario Christmas!” title. This is the first one I …read more

Retro gaming t-shirts featuring Mario, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man

Nothing screams Retro Gaming Fanatic more than apparel, t-shirts to be exact. Well, except for tattoos, which I consider as extreme fanaticism. Anyway, going back to the topic, I’ve found great t-shirts that feature—what else!—retro video gaming icons such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Ryu of Street Fighter fame.
Here are two of my favorite retro gaming t-shirts:

The maker of these retro video gaming t-shirts, 101tshirts.co.uk, also produce retro television, movie and music shirts. Not a fan of t-shirts? No problem. The company specializes in printing our favorite retro video gaming icons on different products …read more

Pac-Man pwns Mario

After suffering a humiliating defeat in the hands, er, paws of Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario is back on a Mugen game, this time versus the yellow chomping machine known as Pac-Man. From the title I just posted, it’s clear that Mario should just go back to cleaning pipes of goombas and turtles.

Look, ma, no hands! It’s strange seeing Pac-Man land blows on the diminutive Mario without flailing arms and legs. It must be his, er, its big mouth.

Mario versus Sonic on Mugen

The debate about who deserves video gamedom’s crown—Mario or Sonic—is probably getting old, but actual fights between the two video game heavyweights deserve attention. Take this video featuring Mario and Sonic beating each other up in a classic Mugen game for example:

Oh, for those wondering what Mugen is, here’s a brief description:
Mugen is a freeware 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte, written in C with the Allegro library. The engine was originally released in July 1999. Beta versions of it were made to work on DOS, Linux and Windows platforms, distributed through their website. The engine allows users to …read more

Pac-Man Christmas Tree lights up Madrid

With the “ber” months in full swing and only a month and a few days left before Christmas, we should already be seeing signs—bright and colorful signs—of the season. So what better way to participate in this grand celebration than spreading cheer on Re:Retro with Christmas-inspired retro-gaming stuff.
One such item is this Pac-Man themed giant Christmas Tree in Madrid, Spain:

Actually, the “tree” looks more like a pyramid or an obelisk. But who cares? Unfortunately, the Pac-Man Christmas Tree was put up in December last year. So we don’t really know if they’re going …read more
