Yesterday, I blogged about the firing of Larry Frank. The former head coach of the New Jersey Nets led the team to an 0-16 start before being let go on Sunday. And if things couldn’t get any worse, the Nets played the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night and lost yet another game, giving them an 0-17 record for the season.

I posed a simple question in my post. I asked, who would want to coach the Nets now? Well, according to SI.com, Patrick Ewing is interested. The former NBA All-Star has been an assistant coach for the past seven seasons. Apparently, he’s ready for a new challenge.

Patrick Ewing has been an assistant coach for seven seasons. He's ready to take the next step.

Taking over as head coach for the Nets would certainly be a challenge. Maybe Ewing wants a chance to prove that he has what it takes to be a head coach in the NBA. If he can turn this team around, he’ll definitely earn his stripes.

Nets general manager, Kiki Vandeweghe will take over as head coach for the time being. According to ESPN.com, Vandeweghe played 13 seasons in the NBA with four teams and was a two-time All-Star. His only coaching experience came in Dallas, under Don Nelson. Despite his lack of experience, Vandeweghe has one thing going for him — if he can win at least one game then he’s one up on Frank.

Tuesday the Warriors will be playing the Los Angeles Lakers. This will be the third game between the Warriors and Lakers in the preseason. The two teams have split the other contests.

Nelson is expected to return to the sidelines by the end of the week. When he does, he faces perhaps his most daunting coaching task of his career. While his roster is talented, there are a lot of explosive personality — not to mention that Stephen Jackson, arguably his best player, wants to be traded.

The 7-footer who played his college basketball at Nebraska gives the Warriors a player who not only has size but who is also mobile. Moore’s outside shooting is above average for a bigman, which fits in well with Golden State’s system.

Last season, the 33-year-old averaged 3.5 points with the Kings before being released. With the Celtics, he averaged 4.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in 26 regular season games. However, once the playoffs rolled around, Moore wasn’t getting much playing time.

Moore is unlikely to start on the Warriors but he’ll be able to backup at both power forward and center. Since Don Nelson likes to use small ball, he’ll likely often find himself surrounded by four smaller players on the court.

Coach Don Nelson of the Golden State Warriors stole Curry right out from under the Knicks’ noses when he picked him 7th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft.

Stephen Curry may have had his bags packed and ready for New York City, but much to the disappointment of the New York Knicks, he’ll be going to the West Coast instead.

Coach Don Nelson of the Golden State Warriors stole Curry right out from under the Knicks’ noses when he picked him 7th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft.

To anyone out there who thinks Nelson is planning on trading Curry to the highest bidder (ahem, Phoenix Suns) — think again.

“He can unpack his bags and relax,” Nelson said after welcoming Curry to Oakland. “He can buy a house. We drafted him because we think he’s a terrific player that fits right into our program. He ain’t going anyplace.”

Curry will be paired up with Monta Ellis to create a quick and sharp-shooting backcourt. He will definitely see playing time this fall, as Nelson hopes Curry can help spark his offensive attack.

“I looked at the top 10, and [the Warriors] jumped off the page with the way they play,” Curry said. “I’m a fan of the game, so I notice these sorts of things. I’ve seen enough of them to know I’d fit in here, at least on the surface. It’s exciting to get here and think about what could happen with this offense and this coaching staff.”

If Curry is as exciting to watch in the NBA as he was in college, then Bay-area basketball fans better get ready for some highlight-reel-worthy plays this season.
