10 Manliest Video Games of All Time: What, no Leisure Suit Larry?!?

I’ve just finished browsing through Arthur’s Hall of Viking Manliness’ 10 Manliest Video Games of All Time, and I have to say, yes, the list is indeed full of manly video games.
How did the guys up at Arthur’s Hall come up with the idea of giving the world such a list of video games? Shatner (yes, after William Shatner), Arthur’s Viking Assistant, gives us the details:
I had a discussion with Arthur the other day regarding the question, “Are video games manly?” While wasting your life away on a couch playing video games isn’t quite as manly as killing small animals …read more

Need a bigger screen to play retro games?

I spent the better part of last week looking on the Internet for a good television set to spend some serious moolah on. I wasn’t setting my sights on anything too fancy, just a simple TV with a big screen that could survive a non-stop week-long DVD marathon, or an equally long Final Fantasy series run.
Unfortunately, a family friend made the choice for me when she dropped by the house and sold us a 21-inch Sanyo television set. Hey, it’s not the best choice, but I got it on a good installment package. It also freed up my thoughts for …read more

Speed Run: Mortal Kombat 2 on Sega

It’s time once again for another speed run. This time we present to you Mortal Kombat 2 on a Sega featuring the wild antics of Shang Tsung. Check it out:

Sigh. It’s quite unfortunate, however, that like most speed runs, this speed run of Shang Tsung on Mortal Kombat 2 is tool assisted and played on an emulator. Ahh, but what the heck. It’s still fun watching a character beat up all his opponents from start to finish.
Next time, I’d like to see the player do it without the tool assist. :p

Old school video game commercials

Here’s yet another collection of old video game and video-game related commercials, and I’ve got to tell you, some of them are really old. It’s a bit disconcerting to watch since it’s really just a mash up with no theme in mind. It does, however, bring back fond memories, especially if you grew up with the featured games.

The video game console controller ‘family tree’

Ever wonder how the modern video game console controller came to be? Well, thanks to the ingenious Sock Master, we now have a pretty good idea. Here’s a little tidbit from his “study” entitled “Sock Master’s Game Console Controller Family Tree”:
How did the current home-console controllers come to be? How have they evolved? You may have noticed some similarities between the current generation controllers, or between them and the previous generations of controllers. So, how do they all tie together?
Let’s try to find out. I’ve put together a chart, or controller family tree, that tries to connect all the current …read more

Video game console collection on video

Unfortunately, the consoles in the video aren’t mine. Boohoo. At least I get to reminisce. It’s wonderful to know that there are video game fanatics out there who have preserved their consoles.
Sigh. My collection isn’t complete anymore. My old Coleco Telstar Arcade is in shambles … the only intact things that came with the original package are the cartridges. Very solid, I must say. My Nintendo Family Computer, on the other hand, still works, but it makes my television go crazy whenever I plug it in. Ditto with my Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Oh, well. I guess it’s time to purchase …read more

Boss battles: Truly inspiring

Talk about inspiring. I’ve just finished my daily rounds of Internet video publishing websites and found this classic video on YouTube featuring the different boss fights of yesteryear. Contra! Mega Man! Castlevania! Legend of Zelda! Punch Out! Sigh. Let me just shut up and dish out the video:

Whew! Makes me wanna bring out the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Nintendo Family Computer again and play all the classics shown in the video … at least, until I reach the stage where the bosses are hiding. *wink, wink*

The History of Video Games in two minutes

I’m currently watching a video on the history of video games by YouTube user applemctom, and my wife, Joyce, keeps asking me why I know majority of the games featured in the video. I guess my video games addiction is finally showing, eh? To test my mettle, I tried to list down in order all the games shown in the two-minute footage. Unfortunately, I didn’t get them all. Before I show my list (rather, before you take a look at it), watch the video and try listing down in order all the games that you see. Let’s compare notes later.

Street Fighter: More Touch of Death combos

Picking up from where we left off, I was talking about Ken Masters’ Touch of Death combo on Street Fighter II. After a few tries (I’m trying to master it, but my fingers are kind of stiff, having been overused in MMORPGs), I’m thoroughly convinced that you can do a Touch of Death combo with all characters on the list of Street Fighter II.
This video proves me right:

I love the combo finish of Ken and Fei Long best.
