If you’ve done any website design at all, or even supported updating content for some of your clients, you’re probably familiar with how Microsoft Word can really mess with your source code if you just copy and paste from a Word Document into your HTML page.

I was helping my brother try and fix some HTML issues he was experiencing with some ExactTarget template messages earlier this afternoon.

As I jumped into the HTML source to see what was going on I saw the chunk of code I inserted above.

Can you believe all of that? There was absolutely nothing special in the code that was being done aside from standard text formatting on size and bold.

What in the world?

That’s a pretty good illustration of why tools like Dreamweaver have an option to “Clean Up Word HTML”

Do You Love Or Hate Microsoft

Mike Abundo at Emerging Earth, just shared his opinion about Microsoft and why nobody’s giving up the love for the big softie. I’ve got to say that I’m not sure if I could categorize my feelings for Microsoft as “love”, but I can tell you I appreciate what they’ve allowed and equipped me to do professionally.

For instance, I’ve gotten far more frustrated (so has this guy) trying to use a Mac than I have a PC in quite awhile. I just ditched Adobe/Macromedia Dreamweaver in favor of Visual Web Developer Express 2005.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of things that frustrate me about Microsoft, but I can also tell you I’ve yet to find a piece of software or a company that I don’t have something to complain about in the way they developed something or do other things.

What about you? Is Microsoft getting the bad rap? Let us know in our new poll.

Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition

Okay I’m trying this again folks. I’ve downloaded and am currently installing Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition on my computer.

I’ve been pounding away at a client application I’m developing and have been very happy using Dreamweaver 8 for everything I’m working on for the project. I’ve been using Macromedia Dreamweaver since version 2.0 and have always done the Dreamweaver / Fireworks together.

However, I’ve found that for this project I’m needing to display images in BLOB format from a SQL server database and I’ve been unsuccessful in finding a component or extension in Dreamweaver that allows me to do this easily. In my searching for potential solutions I came across ImageDraw from Neodynamics. The support from Neodynamics has been astounding too. I haven’t even purchased the product and their tech support, specifically Gabriel, has been amazing. He has helped me try to work with their product and integrate the capabilities into Dreamweaver.

This product seems to do exactly what we’re needing it to do and THEN SOME!, just not with Dreamweaver. So, I’m downloading and trying again. I don’t expect Visual Web Developer to replace my use of Dreamweaver 8, but it may pair up nicely for this project. If anyone has any application that integrates with Dreamweaver 8 and allows me to manage and develop applications and pull images from a database dynamically, then please let me know in the comments.

Will Expression be Dreamweaver’s Nightmare?

Microsoft will be releasing their latest attempt to take over some market share from Adobe’s Dreamweaver. This release will first be going to developers as a Community Technology Preview (CTP). I’m not a part of that group, so I won’t be able to give you any hands-on feedback of the tool.

What I can say though is that I’ve been a Dreamweaver user since DW2, and have recently installed and beein using Dreamweaver 8. I attempted to download and install Visual Studio 2005 Web Developer, as I was beginning to do more development with ASP and thought that would be the best tool to begin using. I also had a friend that was using VS2003, and figured that would give me a good support network. Regretfully, my experience (along with many others) was less than pleasant and I have since uninstalled VS2005 and relied completely on Dreamweaver 8.

I should also say that I wasn’t too happy when Adobe purchased Macromedia, as I was afraid of the culture differences between the two companies. I always felt that Macromedia was very in tune and aware of their user base, and I just have not got that same feeling with Adobe. So, part of me is very open now to another tool if it works. I’m very interested in trying out this tool to compare.

Wayne Smith, product manager for Expression Web Designer at Microsoft, said that the only tool comparable to Expression Web Designer for Web designers right now is Adobe Dreamweaver. But he highlighted Web Designer’s support for ASP.Net 2.0, the latest version of Microsoft’s technology for building Web-based applications and services, as a differentiator between the tools.

“[Dreamweaver] supports ASP.Net version 1.1, but only to a fairly superficial level,” he said. “We have deep support.”

Smith also stressed Microsoft’s effort to support standards such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) in Web Designer. CSS is the standard technology Web designers use to create modern Web-site layout. Microsoft enables Web designers not only to build pages using CSS but also manage the underlying code, which can be a hassle for developers, Smith said.

Granted if anyone should be able to develop a tool that handles ASP.NET 2.0, then it should definitely be the parent company of the language wouldn’t you think? I also know that there’s been no other tool that I have experience with that has taught and equipped me more than Dreamweaver with relation to CSS.

We’ll see how it goes.
