The United States dressage team was stripped of its fourth place finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on September 7 after one team member’s horse, Courtney King’s “Mythilus,” tested positive for a banned substance used as a pain killer and anti-inflammatory. King also loses her 13th place individual finish at the Games. King was given a one-month suspension, which she has already served since she was suspended at the Beijing Games.

Anky van Grunsven Takes Dressage Gold…Again

Anky van Grunsven of the Netherlands (on Salinero) edged out the competition in the individual dressage event to win the Gold Medal, her three straight Gold Medal in this event (and the horse’s second). Germans Isabell Werth (on Satchmo) and Heike Kemmer (on Bonaparte) took the Silver and Bronze Medals, respectively. American Steffen Peters (on Raven) finished fourth.
Germany Takes Team Dressage Gold

The equestrian events continued in Hong Kong on Thursday and the Germans continued their dominance of the sport at the Beijing Games. Team Germany (anchored by Isabell Werth on Satchmo) won the Gold Medal in Team Dressage, their seventh straight Gold in that event. The Silver Medal went to the Netherlands (anchored by Anky van Grunsven on Salinero) and the Bronze went to Denmark (anchored by Andreas Helgstrand on Don Schufro), the first team dressage Olympic medal ever for that country. Australians Dominate First Day of Dressage

The Australian riders made a strong showing during the first day of the dressage competition at the Olympic equestrian venue in Hong Kong. Leading after the first day is Australian Lucinda Fredericks (on Headley Britannia), followed by Belgian Karin Donckers (on Gazelle de la Brasserie) and Australian Megan Jones (on Irish Jester). Clayton Fredericks (Lucinda’s husband-on Ben Along Time) is in fifth place and New Zealand’s Mark Todd (on Gandalf), competing in his sixth Olympic Games, is currently 17th.

US Dressage Trials Conclude this Weekend

The United States Olympic Dressage trials conclude their two weekend event June 27-29 in San Juan Capistrano, California. Three rider/horse combinations will be chosen to compete in Beijing.
Attempting to quality on two different horses is former Olympian Debbie McDonald (pictured above). McDonald won the bronze medal in Athens in 2004 on her horse, Brentina.
