Where are the cleantech hot spots? Earth2Tech has the ultimate map for curious CleanTech Startup watchers. Pinpointing locales around the globe, Earth2Tech’s 101 Cleantech Startups allows you to see all the places that cleantech companies are popping up.
(from Earth2Tech) The different sectors — like solar, energy storage, biofuels and electric vehicles — are all represented by a logo, and each pin on the map has all of the vital stats for each startup (founding year, investors, technology, etc.). We admit we’ve got a bit of a Valley skew, but we’ve thrown in some of the international cleantech heavyweights as well.

Computers, faxes, telephones, cellphones, mobile devices, copiers, the list seems endless and when these gadgets outgrow their usefulness you’ve got to figure out what to do with them. They have become e-waste, a global problem.

There is a growing awareness and a rise in activism in how to handle e-waste responsibly and it may be easier than you think. Here are some of the best resources from around the web for recycling electronics with the Earth in mind.

How to e-Cycle Your Gadgets at Earth2Tech: Resources found here include one of the front runners the Basel Action Network as well as some easy picks you may not know. Tech is the specialty at Earth2Tech and this is a valuable resource for responsible e-waste recycling.

Think Before You Recycle at Inhabitat: This article by Jennifer van der Meer of o2-NYC takes an in-depth look at the problem of e-waste worldwide and offers lots of resources and ideas for ways you can be part of the solution.

E-Cycling Gets Even Greener at Earth2Tech: This read takes a look at different ways that electronics companies are taking responsibility at the end of gadget life with incentives to get consumers to recycle. Included in the mix are Target, Dell and more so head over to Earth2Tech to find out how companies are taking back their e-waste.

At myGreenElectronics you can enter your zip code and find electronics recylers in your neck of the woods.

EPA has the scoop on eCycling here and a list of places where you can recycle old computers and other electronics here.

Earth 911 is a one-stop resource for environmental how-to and you can find community-specific information on eCycling here.

Greener Assets was founded on the premise that business plays a major role in environmental issues. The idea that environmental activism is meant to derail the economy is melting into the sunset, replaced by a worldwide awakening that green is good for business.

For starters there’s the job market. In Top 10 Cleantech Jobs, Earth2Tech has put together a list of ten jobs that are emerging and will shape the future of cleantech. The list of course includes specific jobs related to the energy and green building industries, among others, but is more varied and diverse than you’d think.

And then there’s Van Jones, an activist working to combine solutions to social inequality and environmental destruction. Mr. Jones founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which promotes alternatives to violence and incarceration. The City of Oakland has adopted the Ella Baker Center’s “Green Jobs Corps” proposal, and Van is pushing to create the first-ever Green Enterprise Zone in Oakland.

Van Jones on the Green-Collar Solution

The green economy has the power to deliver new sources of work, wealth and health to low-income people—while honoring the Earth. If you can do that, you just wiped out a whole bunch of problems. We can make what is good for poor black kids good for the polar bears and good for the country.

Then there’s the green revolution of Wal-Mart. Likely the most notorious bottom line watching company that springs to mind – granted with either a bitter distaste or a surrendering affection. Wal-Mart’s recent Live Better Sustainability Summit and sustainable initiatives have sent a green ripple out from the mega-retailer that has reached down the supply chain to surprise even the harshest of critics.

Wal-Mart is aggressively investing approximately $500 million annually in technologies and innovation to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, develop a 20% more efficient prototype and increase fleet efficiency by 25 percent in the next 3 years, doubling efficiency in the next 10 years.

Let’s face it, if Wal-Mart is willing to invest this much in sustainability there is a pay-off to going green.

Van Jones will be at the Bioneers 2007 Conference this weekend.
