As a headliner at Elite XC events with very few pro MMA fights under his belt, he drew a lot of verbal abuse from other MMA fighters and fans. I’ve even said a few words about him here, but after reading a segment in the latest Tapout Magazine, I feel that perhaps I was wrong to judge and talk badly about the man.

You have to think about it this way. On Youtube Kimbo Slice was a bad-ass street fighter for quite a few years before being picked up in the MMA circuit. Elite XC more or less saw this guy and their eyes lit up green. They knew that a lot of people watched the viral Youtube videos and if they watched the videos then they would surely like to see how he faired in the ring in an MMA match. So they offer him a contract and you could almost say they exploited him in a way. They offer him a contract in hopes of making money. Of course Kimbo is not going to turn down a contract where he can potentially make money doing something that he’s pretty good at. Most MMA fighters have to work their way up through the circuits, but when a promoter sees money making potential, they jump on it before the next guy does.

If you were an MMA fighter (and some readers may be) and were offered a contract to make some real money in the sport and not have to work a normal day job, 99.9% would take it, right? Why not? Very rarely would you find someone that says, “Nah, I’d rather train longer and hold out, while taking more fists to the face before I take any contract.”. It’s not selling out, it’s taking an opportunity. Sometimes when opportunity knocks you have to open that door, drag it inside and put it in a rear naked choke because it won’t come around often. Sometimes you have to dive in head first to discover your own true potential.

Kimbo Slice was always pretty humble in his pre-fight interviews. He never talked immense amounts of trash in order to intimidate his opponents and make himself look like King Shit…or a Shamrock. He normally wouldn’t say much more than something like “I’m gonna go out there and do what I do.”. Unfortunately for him, he may have to work his way up the ladder top get to where he once was. Here is just a sliver of what Bas Rutten had to say about Kevin Ferguson in the last issue of Tapout Magazine. In case you were not aware, Bas Rutten did quite a bit of training with Kimbo Slice.

Kimbo didn’t ask for this; it just happened.Kimbo would never say he was the best–far from it– because in every interview that he did, he would always say, and I quote, “I am still a little squirrel in this big world trying to learn the game.” He didn’t disrespect other fighters, he wasn’t a bad role model, he trained hard and he actually tried to be a perfect role model since he knew that a lot of people, especially kids, watched his every move.

There was quite a bit more to this article that kind of opened my eyes about Kimbo Slice. Do I think he’s a great fighter? Better than I am, that’s for sure. The article just made me realize more that it wasn’t completely Kimbo’s fault that he was pushed in to the spotlight before he “earned” his way in to the MMA circuit. Just about every hardcore MMA fan and fighter is going to give someone a hard time when they are thrown a bone that perhaps they don’t deserve right away. Brock Lesnar is getting a lot of that now, but he’s fought a few top stars in his short career in MMA. The difference between the two is that Brock already made a name for himself in the world of wrestling, both “pro” and amateur. Kimbo was just a street fighter on Youtube. If you think Dana White didn’t sign Brock for monetary gain like Elite XC did for Slice then you’re crazy. The main difference is that Brock has fought hard hitting, technical and reputable fighters in his three fights in the UFC. That was the UFC’s choice.

Perhaps Kimbo would not have fought so well against fighters of the same caliber, but it was Elite XC making the matches kind of lop-sided. They didn’t want people to see Kimbo Slice lose his first fight, that wouldn’t have been good TV. Perhaps if they were not headlining events, he would not have got so much ridicule. I’m not saying that we should all just become Kimbo Slice fans, I just think maybe we should stop and think before we criticize someone for taking a great opportunity and being exploited by a promoter, that’s all.

Before I get started let me first say that I’m not picking on Ken and I know I’m not the first person to raise this question, but his track record has fallen greatly in the last three years. He’s lost all 5 of his last fights all in the first round and was scratched from his last main event fight in the last Elite XC fight with Kimbo Slice.

At 44 years old, Shamrock is still in great physical condition. MMA Junkie reports that Ken is set to fight in a co-promoted event with Cali based promotion “Wargods” and his own promotion “KSP”. There is no opponent for Shamrock named yet, but this just bring sup the question, when will Shamrock save face and call it a day? I’d like to see Shamrock go out on a winning note and retire as a fighter.

There has been rumor that he may fight his adopted brother, Frank Shamrock in a bout that would be hailed as a highly anticipated “Super-fight”. A lot of people say that they really have no desire to see this fight happen. Personally I think the younger Frank Shamrock would dominate this fight.

Wow, November is over all ready and the end of 2008 is right around the corner. Where the hell does the time go? We’ve seen some exciting fights this year and it can only get better…or can it? To me it seems that some promotions are shooting for "Super Fights" to draw cash instead of singing matches with people that deserve a title match. That’s nothing really new though, is it? Anyway, I have a few things and link of interest here for this end of the month wind-down.

First up, we saw an UFC and MMA Veteran lose his title to an MMA/UFC rookie with the Brock Lesnar Vs. Randy Couture fight. With the huge difference in weight between these tow fighters there has been a lot of people questioning if there should be a weigh class within the Heavyweight class. MMAWeekly.com presented this question to the Nevada Stats Athletic Commission. Their response was "This already exists", referring to the Super-Heavyweight class. Not really the answer they were shooting for, though. You can read what other SAC’s said at MMAWeekly.com.

This month also saw the dethroning of the WEC Featherweight Champ, Urijah Faber. Mike Brown caught Faber with a huge right in the first round of this highly anticipated fight and then capitalized on a stunned Faber and beat him in to a TKO (by punches, ref stoppage). Faber wants an immediate rematch in an attempt to reclaim his lost title, but we may see a Jens Pulver/Faber part 2 instead. I’d like to see someone else (like Leonard Garcia) face Mike Brown first, but Faber definitely deserves a shot again.

Within the last 2 months there has been more controversy with ProElite and EliteXC as ProElite shut down it’s operations leaving a lot of fighters in limbo and waiting to find out what the future holds for them. Will they become free agents or will their contracts be sold to another promotion?

Dana White has been running his mouth A LOT lately. Some say he’s become a huge ego-maniac and it’s bad for the sport. Being president of one of the biggest MMA promotion is a big responsibility. With the success of the UFC and Zuffa it’s tough for smaller promotions/competition to break through. With Dana White constantly talking trash and banning other promotions, clothing lines, etc. it doesn’t make it any easier. Is Dana burning too many bridges that he could possibly use in the future or is he just doing what the execs. at Zuffa tell him to? MMAFighting.com’s Friday Mailbag discussed a few of those issues.

Bobby Lashley, another Pro-wrestler gone MMA finds himself kind of in Limbo as the promotion he is currently signed with (Kentucky’s AFL), is in an unknown status. He’s bound to his contract but it seems that after the recent success this year of Brock Lesnar, other promotions are showing interest because of the big draw of the former pro-wrestling star. Until then, Lashley will have to ride out his contract. He recently spoke to TAGG Radio, a partner of MMA Junkie. It’s a great read and I think that Lashley could do well for himself in MMA. He big, he’s quick and he’s got good cardio. We’ll have to wait and see after a few fights.

After an extremely disappointing fight and an unprofessional turn of events for Paulo Filho this past WEC 36 with his bout with Chael Sonnen, the fighter was dropped from WEC. Though the WEC is dropping their middleweight division, Filho would have been a fighter considered for a move to the UFC next year. After his loss and not being able to make weight for his last fight it was bound to happen. Right now his management says that the priority for Paulo Filho is to get his life back in order and his mind focused.

Lastly, it’s been reported quite recently that Pat Miletich is getting back in to the ring next month. Miletich will face Tommy Denny at Adrenaline MMA’s second show in the Miletech Fighting System’s backyard of Moline Iowa. Read more on that at MMAWeekly.com.

Well that wraps things up here for the Month. Moving in to December we have a handful of great MMA fights coming up that you won’t want to miss.

ProElite has had their Promotional licenses reinstated by the California Stat Athletic Commission, so Jake Shields is not a free agent just yet. Like all the other EliteXC fighters, he’ll have to wait it out to see what happens in the near future.

If George St.Pierre beats B.J. Penn, he could be facing Anderson Silva next by moving up in a weight class. Of course this is just a rumored thing right now, but Dana White spoke about it at MMAWeekly.com. That would be a fight to see.

MMAJunkie.com reports that some MMA agents are uniting to try to stop Showtime from auctioning the contracts of Elite XC fighters. ProElite closed it’s doors last last month and Showtime had invested money into ProElite and Elite XC and is owed compensations for the fall out. However, the MMA agents are fighting the legality of Showtime’s attempts to auction off the contracts as part of the ProElite liquidation. Here is an excerpt from the letter:

The unity of this effort is unprecedented and the message that is being sent is clear. Absent significant pre-established negotiated terms, do not bid on these contracts unless you are prepared to fight the challenge to their legality. It is our intention to honor our commitment to Pro Elite, but if Pro Elite is not able to perform in accordance with the contractual terms, the fighters should be granted unrestricted free agency with the unfettered ability to enter the marketplace.

Many managers submitted letters to Elite XC notifying them of breech of contract. A contract is a contract, and I’ve never seen the stipulations of the contract, but I don’t feel that these fighters should be sold like property.

So the big news this weeks MMA Happening was Mike Brown taking the title from the WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber at WEC 36. In the short time we saw Mike Brown in the ring he showed some pretty good skill, strength and smarts. Urijah Faber has won some fights with some unorthodox moves that have at times looked sloppy but have worked because of his speed. This time one of those moves backfired on him and he got caught with an enormous right hand with a lot of velocity behind it. Mike Brown was smart enough to finish the job with a sense of urgency before Faber had a chance to recover. Was it a fluke? I don’t think so and we’ll have a chance to find out with the next challenger when Mike Brown defends his title.

Also on WEC 36, Paulo Filho weighed in 7 pounds over for his title fight against Chael Sonnen. He lost 3 pounds and didn’t make weight again so it was declared a 3 round, non-title fight. Paulo Filho wanted to take the fight to the ground but Sonnen wouldn’t let him, so he played it safe but lost the fight in points to Sonnen. Sad that Sonnen didn’t get his shot at the title before WEC dissolving that weight class at the end of the year.

Jens Pulver lost a quick 1 round fight to Leonard Garcia by TKO (strikes). This isn’t the Jens Pulver I remember, but stranger things have happened. Before the fight started, Garcia kept pinching his nipple. I guess that’s what he does to get ready for a fight. Garcia says he wants a title shot against newly crowned champion, Mike Brown.

The same night of the fight, or early the morning after Hermes Franca was arrested for DUI in Jupiter Florida. Franca attended the WEC event in Hollywood, Fla.. Hermes Franca keeps getting himself in trouble, he may find himself out of a contract.

Mike Kaplan of Team Mir lost in the first round of his fight on The Ultimate Fighter against Team Nogueira’s Philipe Novar by TKO (Ref stoppage from strikes). Some pranks were played in the house again and this time it involved bodily fluids.

ProElite announced that they would be auctioning off their entire assets in a public auction on November 17th in Los Angeles. All fighters contracts will also be auctioned with the company.

Chris Leben tested positive for steroids after losing to his fight at UFC 90 to Michael Bisping. The test was conducted on the day of the fight but the results didn’t get back until recently. Leben tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanazalol. He was suspended for 9 months and fined 1/3 of his purse from UFC 90.

That’s it for this week. We’ll see you back here on Monday. Thanks for tuning in.

MMAJunkie.com reports that the auction for ProElite will happen in Los Angeles later this month and all "tangible and intangible assets". Unfortunately or maybe not, this includes contracts of the fighters currently signed to EliteXC.
The sale will include contracts with a number of EliteXC fighters, including Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson, Gina Carano, Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, Frank Shamrock and many others.

I expect Kimbo to take a huuuuge pay cut. Maybe we’ll see him on season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter, but that’s highly unlikely. Dana white has expressed interest in Jake Shields and I wish WEC or UFC could [...]
Post from: EveryJoe

From what I’m reading, this looks to be a package deal though so I doubt if it will be bought up by Zuffa.
So there you go. Any chances of ProElite or EliteXC promoting any future fights are now in the hands of some one with a fat wad of cash. This is kind of strange seeing that just recently they told a few fighter’s managers that they would be promoting fights in early 2009. I’m not sure of the legalities here, but I’d be willing to bet that some of the fighters will be exercising their rights to file a breach of contract. It’s quite obvious that something a shady was going on in this promotion. I never liked this promotion for the simple reason that the fighters were cutting promos in a pro-wrestling style that came of scripted and cheesy.
