SEGA waxes nostalgic, to release Ultimate Mega Drive Collection for Xbox 360, PS3
PC World Australia may have beaten me to the punch, but the news about SEGA’s impending release of the Ultimate Mega Drive Collection for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is still news.
Late last year, the SEGA Ultimate Mega Drive Collection had merely been a rumor. Now, it’s a reality, and it’s coming to video game store shelves this January 26, at least in Australia. Is it also slated for release in North America and Europe? I really have no idea.
All I know is what’s in the SEGA Ultimate Mega Drive Collection. Here’s a partial rundown: Sonic the Hedgehog (1, …read more
Even the iPhone is going retro
I know, I know … it was only a matter of time before the powerful allure of the past caught up with the equally powerful pull of the future, but the news is surprising nonetheless. Yes, retro games are now available for the iPhone, the 4.5 inch by 2.4 inch by 0.48 inch marvel of technology created by Apple, and have been for some time now.\r\n\r\nIGN\’s Levi Buchanan gives us the lowdown on retro video games on the iPhone:\r\n\r\n
The iPhone may be the newest gaming rig on the field, but it\’s starting to host its fair share of yesteryear. Some …read more
Metroid Quarantine: Samus Aran and her universe in Lego
Dangnabit! The title is a dead giveaway! Well, I\’d like you to take a gander at the image below:\r\n\r\n
\r\n\r\nPretty little Lego spaceship, eh? It\’s actually a model of Samus Aran\’s gunship in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and is part of a collection of images on Flickr known as Metroid Quarantine. The collection of Metroid-related pictures is but the tip of the iceberg. The group also has a website known as (what else!) Metroid Quarantine, The Metroid Blog.\r\n\r\nGo check out Metroid Quarantine\’s other photos.\r\n\r\nOh, and if you\’re wondering what Samus Aran\’s gunship looks like in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, here\’s a …read more
Company of Heroes machinima: Frank and Dale #1
Yes, it’s machinima time once again. This time, let’s take a look at Company of Heroes machinima Frank and Dale – Episode 1, otherwise known as Field. In the first installment of the series, created by Richard BF, a bloke from Australia, we find Frank and Dale (yes, they’re the lead characters in the series) in a field somewhere in Europe during World War II. And it’s not just any field, as Frank points out to Dale.
Why don’t I just shut up and let you watch the video:
The first time I watched the clip, I found the humor dry. No …read more
Gordon Freeman in Mario Land #2
Okay, okay, wait! Before you bash my head in with that axe after showing you a bad video about Gordon Freeman’s adventure in the world of Super Mario Brothers, I want you to take a look at these videos and tell me which is better:
Well, regardless of which video you choose, one thing’s for certain: They’re both better than the video I showed you in my previous posting, Gordon Freeman in Mario Land.
My only beef with the guys who did the modifications is the way they presented the world of Super Mario Brothers. Come on! The game Super Mario Brothers …read more
Gordon Freeman in Mario Land
Ever heard of crossovers? In comic books, sure, crossovers are a dime a dozen. In the past dozen or so years, we’ve seen crossovers within the same universe, like Superman versus Lobo for the DC Universe and Spiderman versus The Hulk in the Marvel Universe, and between universes, such as the DC versus Marvel crossover, which has resulted in the creation of the Amalgam Universe.
Waitaminute! This blog isn’t about comic books! Duh! It’s about retro and classic video games. So where are the crossovers in the video gaming realm? Believe it or not, the most well known crossover in this …read more
Even students are into the Mario Christmas spirit
Here’s a simple video made by Evan Ferguson of Australia for his class:
Not too shabby for a student. I’m sure Santa Claus got the surprise of his jolly life.
You’re probably sick of Super Mario Brothers-themed Christmas postings, but for those who missed the first two, here are the links:
Have a very Mario Christmas!
Have a very Mario Christmas, too!
Oh, and go check out Evan’s other video, “A newb’s first linerider!”
Play Tetris and Breakout on a piggy bank
I’ve stumbled upon these unique piggy banks that allow you to, well, save while playing two classic video games, Tetris and Breakout. Of course, you need to deposit a coin to play a game, much like the way real arcade game machines function.
Come to think of it, these piggy bank arcade game machines don’t just force you to save but you can probably make them pay for themselves by allowing others to play Tetris and Breakout on them. Hey, at USD 40.74 per piggy bank, that’s not such a bad idea.

Retro Machinima: Only The Strong Survive using Max Payne 2 engine
Like I said in a posting last month on MMOtaku, another b5media technology blog I’m handling, I am starting to love machinima. This revolution in independent film making is nothing new in the world of massively multiplayer online games. It is, however, very rare for old or classic games to get the attention of producers and directors as good machine cinema fodder.
Fortunately, there are old or classic games that do make the cut. Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, and The Sims series come to mind.
Armed with this information, I quickly scoured the Web and …read more
A round of Lego Tetris, anyone?
Speaking of Lego and the amazing things you can create with Lego blocks, here’s another fine example of how this classic toy jibes well with classic video games:
I like the transitions between levels, but the music just knocks the whole thing off balance. I mean, where’s the Russian-sounding background music? I also love the ending. Yes, the video has a great ending. If you didn’t view it till the end, you might want to view it again.
To the guys up at Rojhelio Studios, a low-budget film production company owned by Ryan Murphy, great work, guys. More retro gaming videos, please. …read more
