Greenfest in Philly

Greenfest started as a small green block party in 2006. Times have changed, and in 2007, the festival covered 4 blocks and 130 vendors, and it was attended by over 14,000 people. This year promises to be even bigger and better. The theme is “water” and everyone is invited to attend. Here are some of the things you can expect:

An eco-poetry slam
An organic vegan pastry contest
Live music
Recycling stations
Water filling stations
Used sneaker recycling
An eco-friendly fashion show and clothing swap
Bike valet services
Activities for the kids
Environmental films

Greening your Business Event

Earlier this month, Danny Bradbury at Business Green posted a really great story about McAfee’s attempt to hold a environmentally-friendly conference. You can take the lessons from this story and apply them to your own business event. No matter how big or how far, if you’re planning an event, keep the environment in mind. Here are some great tips to use:

Choose a venue that is in a central location and that have good public transportation.
Purchase food from local providers, instead of going to a chain restaurant for catering.
Make your conference literature available online instead of having paper handouts. …read more

Is Earth Day Dead?

Earth Day is on April 22 this year, and some are claiming that this environmental-awareness “holiday” is a sham. They cite the fact that Earth Day (and the recently celebrated Earth Hour) isn’t really tackling any of the main problems. And I agree. However, I 100% believe that Earth Day and Earth Hour are good for the world.
The main problem opponents see with these celebrations is that they’re targeting consumption, not the bigger problem – production. Yes, but using less energy, we’re al helping the world. However, the major players in the energy battle are the large corporations. The …read more

Great Green Leap Day Encourages Volunteerism

The National Trust, a UK non-profit that counts over 50,000 people among its workforce and volunteers, has decided that the highest and best use of the extra day that leap year brings next week is to encourage a day of environmental service. The organization has told its staff and volunteers to take the day off as long as you use it to save the planet on Great Green Leap Day, February 29th, 2008.
So, instead of a free day’s work from their huge staff, The National Trust is sending out the spirit of volunteerism. Workers are encouraged to “reflect on their …read more
