Four Add-ons DOA After Firefox 3.5 Upgrade

I upgraded my Firefox installation to the latest version, which is 3.5 if you’re counting. I got the warning saying that some of my add-ons/extensions wouldn’t work with the upgrade. I thought I’d take the chance it wasn’t any of them I was really addicted to and proceeded with the install.

The four extensions that were dead with the upgrade were the following:

coComment
Google Gears
Google Notebook
New Tab to Window

The tab function was okay to lose as moving tabs around was a specific feature added in the new version of Firefox 3.5. coComment I enjoyed using, but figured I could do without it …read more

Ongoing Problem of Gmail Images Displaying

It wasn’t too long ago that I posted an article about having issues with Gmail’s image display settings. There’s a great function where you can tell Gmail to always display images from certain senders. At least it would be a great setting if it worked.

Reading through the comments from my earlier post on this Gmail image issue there are a number of other people experiencing the same challenge. I’m sad they’re going through this too, but it’s good to know it’s not something just unique to my system.
Reposting this to hopefully get a solution from someone out there if you …read more

Now Running Internet Explorer 8

After downloading and installing Internet Explorer 8 onto the computers of various members of my family, I’ve now downloaded and installed it on my own machine. There’s not a whole lot that you’ll notice that’s different initially. I believe I have noticed that pages do seem to be loading a bit faster in IE8 than previously in IE7.

I’ve had to use the compatibility feature on a couple of sites, ones that I’ve developed for clients, so there’s so more work for me to take care of and make sure those are up to par.
I’m still using Firefox as my browser …read more

Begin Exploring Internet Explorer 8

As I was reading through the WXPNews, another interesting article that Deb pointed me to was one written by Mrs. Microsoft, Mary Jo Foley.
The topic of discussion is what we may have to look forward to in IE8. From the looks of it, it appears that most of the changes are going to be under the hood and focused more towards the development community.
Microsoft may be looking for developers to “opt-in” for a more standards compliant development plan using IE. More support for CSS 2.1, more open API’s for new extensions from the community.
The other topic of discussion was how …read more

Firefox Copies IE7?

I just downloaded Firefox 2.0 and installed it. Two questions:

They copied IE7’s option of the close box within the tab itself
Are they calling extensions add-ons now like IE7? Why?

Screen Real Estate Comparison 2 – IE7 vs. Firefox

In the comments of my last post about screen real estate comparisons between Firefox and the new IE7, Robert Aitchison wanted me to compare the two without all the 3rd party toolbars installed.
How about the copmparison without all the 3rd party toolbars loaded?, or alteas cut it down to one.
Also you’ll notice that Firefox has a menu bar while IE7 does not, I’ll admin I haven’t used IE7 but it seems like not having a menu bar would be extremely limiting.
So, I decided to do an additional little comparison without the toolbars. As you can see, IE7 still has a …read more

Forgetting About Firefox

I’ve been using IE7 now almost exclusively since downloading the final version this week. I’ve already posted that there are some things I like about it compared to Firefox.
Another feature I like is the full-page view of all open tabs.

I’m sure there was a Firefox extension that let me do that as well. That brings me to the one area I think will be missing in the comparison between IE7 and Firefox, extensions. I know that IE7 has add-ons and stuff, but the community just isn’t quite as active it seems as Firefox.
What are some of the IE7 add-ons you’ve …read more

Trying IE7 Again

Trying IE7 Again

I decided to try the IE7 beta again to see what’s improved. I really like it! I think they’ve done a better job of organizing and streamlining the default interface, although they have made it hard to really adjust it to even a more minimalist state like I prefer. I really try to shrink and stack toolbars and buttons as much as possible and I’m a little limited as to what I can do now compared with IE6.
I’m still getting used to not having some of the extensions I’ve gotten used to having at my disposal with Firefox. Guess I’ll …read more
