Struggling in terms of they are a great idea which were ’struggling’ to work. I was even more disappointed to learn that I could transfer my group to a Facebook page earlier this year. So I was intrigued to see the latest evolving changes to groups which seem to make so much sense

Facebook describes Giving Groups a Stronger Voice which is summarised as

Revamping the design for Groups so that they look similar to other parts of the site such as profiles and Pages-groups will now have a Wall that summarizes all the recent activities of people within the group and a Publisher that enables members to share their content.

Second, group activities, which previously only appeared in the group, will now be delivered to your News Feed. … you only will see stories when one of your friends posts within a group rather than when all members post.

Interacting with Groups will become easier since you can follow the links to the content directly from the News Feed stories or make comments on these stories directly from your home page.

You can choose to see only group-related stories on your home page by sorting by Groups from the filters on the left-hand side.

All of these changes make sense to me and especially the updates to the news feeds which will help to promote discussion within the groups. The key distinction between pages and groups remains the former is a way to broadcast out, groups are a way to discuss…..and these changes have just made the latter so much easier.

Last week Ning achieved the milestone of having 1,000,000 social networks which quite literally surprised me. Ning has fallen into the background with the emergence of Facebook groups, Friendfeed and of course at a different level Twitter. Though I have to say I wonder how many of them are fully active?
For anyone who wants to quickly put together a quick social networking platform then Ning is a great option. Twitter Moms and Mugglespace for Harry Potter fans are examples of how you can grow a thriving community.

Ning is worth checking out not only if you are looking at creating a social network but also if you are trying to reach out to niche communities. What are the key points to create a successful Ning community?

Understand who your community is and what your community isn’t…

Promote the community through a combination of traditional and social media techniques.

Create value and valuable content. You will need to facilitate until the community is ready to manage the site, and during this time ensure that you give people something to talk about…gossip marketing at its best

Keep the momentum going with fresh value, fresh content and fresh reasons to join
