The Classic Daiquiri

I’m sitting outside right now as I type this and my feet are cold and that tells me one thing…OK…two things. #1 My feet are cold and #2 that Summer is officially transitioning into Fall.

So, for one last Summer drink, I thought that I’d give you the recipe for a classic daiquiri. Trust me. It’s not what you think it is.

A classic daiquiri isn’t colored and it’s not slushy and it’s not super sweet. A classic daiquiri resembles a mojito [kinda] more than it resembles what you’re thinking of when you think “daiquiri”.

The Classic Daiquiri

Ingredients:

1 1/2 oz light rum
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 tsp simple syrup
ice

Directions:

Fill your cocktail shaker half full of ice and add your other ingredients.

Shake everything until it’s well mixed and very cold. Strain the mix into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a happy umbrella if you have one hanging around.

Since we’re the type to laugh at other people’s expense,* it would have been a shame—a shame, we tell you—if we couldn’t find a sports-ish angle for this delicious story (with photos) on Prada models falling off their heels on the runway.

Here are the snarky remarks that came to mind:

Maybe if they ate protein, or even just ate, they wouldn’t be so wobbly.
Maybe if they worked out, they’d have enough muscles to stand and, you know, not fall.
Maybe they should get the Wii Fit and play the balance games.
Maybe they should take some lessons from the chicks (and even a few guys) who participate in the annual Stiletto Race in Sydney, Australia.

There. We knew we could make this story relevant to Gossip on Sports. Go us!

*On the blog. We’re not quite this hateful in real life. Slightly less so.

The USA might blow everyone away in the medal count at the Summer Olympics—104 in 2004, with Russia taking 92 and China, 63—but when it comes to international beauty competitions, the red, white, and blue has been slipping. Literally.

Last year, Miss USA slipped and fell during the evening gown competition of the Miss Universe Pageant (and Mexico laughed at us. ‘Nuff said.).

This year we had an encore presentation to add to the Viral Video Historical Archive. Watch (37s) as Miss USA maintains composure after the spill yet has the distinct look of wanting to bitch-slap someone—the floor-waxer, perhaps?—when her back is to the audience.

Somewhere, an ambitious entrepreneur is starting a company that would teach young Miss USA hopefuls how to walk in high heels while wearing an evening gown. And well they should. We can’t have this tomfoolery year after year. For the love of all that is sacred in women’s footwear fashion, make the tumbles stop!
