The Fallout 3 release date is just around the corner and GameTrailers was ruthless enough to show off several more videos to get us all worked up before the big day. If you’re looking for more reasons to aggravate the Fallout 3 itch, hit the jump to watch even more videos.
Fallout 3 is hitting North American store shelves on October 28. The Bethesda-developed RPG is arriving in Europe and Australia on October 30, and Japan in December 4.

I love Fallout. I played the first two games with gusto, and I’m looking forward to the third part. Others gamers worry that Fallout 3 would just be “Oblivion with guns” because it’s also being developed by Bethesda so perhaps the video would change your minds.
However, I do have a new concern with Fallout 3.
The animation of the characters doesn’t look very good at this point. And what’s with the Bloody Mess perk that kicked in when an enemy was shot in the head with a sniper rifle?
I love Fallout. I played the first two games with gusto, and I’m looking forward to the third part. Others gamers worry that Fallout 3 would just be “Oblivion with guns” because it’s also being developed by Bethesda so perhaps the video would change your minds.

However, I do have a new concern with Fallout 3.

The animation of the characters doesn’t look very good at this point. And what’s with the Bloody Mess perk that kicked in when an enemy was shot in the head with a sniper rifle? I can understand when a cranium explodes like a watermelon when hit by such firearms, but why did the entire body fall apart?

If you’re reading this Bethesda, please note—the effects of Bloody Mess SHOULD have a basis. If an enemy is shot in the foot (or any other extremity) and the bad guy’s hit points run out, the entire corpse SHOULD NOT explode.

Perhaps it would be more appropriate if this is what happens instead: the entire foot that was shot explodes, bone fragments in said foot splinters, the body loses balance and tips over, then the head hits the ground and the enemy’s neck is broken violently. Feel free to make the broken neck’s angle as grotesque as possible. Now that’s an appropriate Bloody Mess.

I would love to hear any other ideas to make that bloodier. And please keep it in context.

All these special editions for each game is coming out left and right. Metal Gear Solid 4 has one, so does Crysis and Grand Theft Auto IV. If you haven’t noticed by now, they’re ways for game companies to make an extra buck. Heck, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, but a particular special edition I learned about takes the cake.

Remember when we announced that there’s going to be a collector’s edition for Fallout 3? Well, that’s not the end of it. According to Bethesda, there’s going to be a Fallout 3 “survival edition” that’s coming out for all versions of the game.

Interestingly, this edition is available for pre-order exclusively through Amazon.

The package includes a life-size replica of the Pip-Boy 3000, the wrist-mounted device worn by Fallout characters. The Pip-Boy 3000 is actually a digital clock, in case you’re wondering. The edition would include all of the items included in Fallout 3’s collector’s edition:

The Fallout 3 game;

Customized, metal Vault-Tec lunch box;

5″ Vault Boy Bobblehead;

‘The Art of Fallout 3‘ hardcover book; and

‘The Making of Fallout 3‘ DVD.

In other words, it’s the glorified digital clock that makes this survival edition different, and that you can only get it via Amazon. Who knows how much you have to cough up for that thing? Perhaps some <s>nerds</s> hardcore collectors would snap this offer up.

If you’re somewhat normal but is inexplicably compelled to get any special edition for Fallout 3, then do your parents a favor by accomplishing the following: a) get out of their basement, b) spend your own money, and c) purchase the one without the clock. If you’re as normal as can be, just buy the game when it comes out.

FYI, the Amazon page is unavailable as of this writing.

Fallout fans are a critical lot, but you can’t blame them. Despite developer Bethesda Softworks’s pedigree in making awe-inspiring RPGs, there are still fans that remain on the fence when it comes to Fallout 3. Can you imagine turning a beloved isometric-view RPG into an FPS? I still can’t either.
When news of a collector’s edition for Fallout 3 came out, the fan in me was jolted wide awake.

Fare thee well, 2007. Let’s welcome 2008 and embrace what’s in store for our respective systems. Now if we can find a way to travel through time and visit Q2 for Metal Gear Solid 4, it would really blow my socks off.

Fallout 3 is deep in development. After years of wait, rumors, a Van Buren tech demo, and change of developers, the beloved RPG franchise is finally underway and in the hands of the very capable Bethesda Softworks.

Then why is FPS Rantings covering it?

After years of wait, rumors, a Van Buren tech demo, and change of developers, the beloved RPG franchise is finally underway and in the hands of the very capable Bethesda Softworks.

Then why is FPS Rantings covering it?

While the game is an RPG, Fallout 3 offers us the option of shooting stuff in real time. There’s also a system in place for those who can’t handle the twitch, but you can bet your bullets which system we’ll use.

Joystiq gave us more details about the highly-anticipated sequel, and suffice to say, we’re happy with what we’ve heard. The entry was quick to add that Fallout 3 isn’t “Oblivion with guns.” The game’s engine comes with a spiffy “parallax occlusion mapping” that lets you riddle almost every surface with bullet holes.

<o> </o>

Sounds like an FPS to me.

<o> </o>

There’s not much detail with the story, other than an underlying need to exit Vault 101, your home, to look for your missing father, who will be voiced by Liam Neeson.

<o> </o>

Fallout 3 will use the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, which lets you pause the game as you plan out your next moves. There will be number crunching under the hood as an RPG should, and shots can be targeted at specific parts of an enemy’s body. Some really good hits will result in gruesome, slow-motion replay. Bethesda thinks the system is similar to Burnout’s crash mode, but with body parts.

<o> </o>

Like all news of upcoming games, concerns crop up. My chief anxiety is the hardware requirements. I’m expecting a mandatory PC upgrade when the game comes out in fall of ‘08. Sure, you can always go for the consoles, but an upgrade is actually cheaper even if you’re looking at an Xbox 360 as your next toy.
