Initially, I was a bit nervous about reviewing a whiskey since I had a bad experience with Jim Beam back in college. Don’t ask. Let’s just say that IHOP, a lot of dancing and Jim Beam and coke don’t equal a good night in my book.

The fine, fine folks over at Johnnie Walker thought that I might be interested in trying a bit of their Johnnie Walker Black Label for a review and maybe give it a suggestion as a good Father’s Day gift.

Initially, I was a bit nervous about reviewing a whiskey since I had a bad experience with Jim Beam back in college. Don’t ask. Let’s just say that IHOP, a lot of dancing and Jim Beam and coke don’t equal a good night in my book.

After a bit of research [which shall have to wait for another post] I learned that Johnnie Walker is a whisky, not a whiskEy. [Notice the addition of the E?] Also, Johnnie Walker is a Scotch and not a Bourbon whiskey. Again, a post unto itself.

THE POINT, is that many would say that my slight prejudice against Johnnie Walker was unfounded since I was in-fact comparing apples to oranges, if you will.

So the alcohol fairy [meaning the FedEx lady] brought me a big ole box containing a big ole bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label and after considering my drinking options for a bit, I decided to drink it neat so that I could really get a feel for the Scotch.

And ya know, that first sip almost wiped away those horrible memories from college. The Scotch was sweet and clean and almost tasted like vanilla-I kid you not. But, it wasn’t girly. This isn’t a drink that you would offer your dad and blush when spat it out in your face.

I ended up mixing it with a vanilla Diet Pepsi [it was GOOD!] and sipped on it for the rest of the night. By the time I was ready to go to bed, I was warm and fuzzy and very pleased with my choice of jobs.

So. Bottom line. Should you pick your dad up a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label for Father’s Day?

If you’re dad is a fan of a fine tasting Scotch then I say grab him a bottle and pop a bright red bow on it.
