I stayed away from del.icio.us for quite awhile, but have recently started using that as well to organize my websites.

I’ve been spending a little bit of time recently going through the thousands of bookmarks I’ve got saved in my local Firefox browser. I’ve been a happy user of the Google Toolbar for quite some time now and have relied on it for keeping most of my bookmarks.

I stayed away from del.icio.us for quite awhile, but have recently started using that as well to organize my websites. My thoughts behind using del.icio.us was to export all my existing bookmarks to it, but then also use it as a storage place for all the interesting websites I came across regularly.

I’ve got Firefox bookmarks, I run Internet Explorer because I have a number of clients that have their as their corporate default browser so I have IE favorites as well. Then there’s the Google toolbar bookmarks and my del.icio.us links going too. Although not quite a favorite or bookmark, I’ve also got all my RSS feeds stored in Bloglines. How do you keep everything organized?

There’s a challenge with me of trying to figure out how to effectively use everything as needed without duplicating effort or usefulness. I think the best way to move forward is to really look at each tool and determine how you want to use each one for yourself. As you’re using it, then remember how and when you’ve decided to use each one for it’s own specific task.

Today I spent a little bit of time trying to figure out something that should be much more obvious than it is for the end-user. All I wanted to do was to export my Google Bookmarks so I could share a section with someone very easily in a list format.

Snagit of Google Bookmarks Functionality

If you click on “Manage all…” as shown in the image above, you get the general bookmark management screen, but nowhere on that screen is there any type of wording that would suggest how to quickly export your bookmarks to a file.

Here’s where it become a challenge for me. I didn’t want to export all of my bookmarks, just a subset of them that I had created. I clicked on the subset I wanted and then went to the “Tools” drop-down control in the top-right of the screen. Nothing would activate. Couldn’t figure out why.

I found this page letting me know that I could quickly download my bookmarks by just going to this link (http://www.google.com/bookmarks/bookmarks.html) on my computer.

What I’ve discovered later was that if you click on a subset of your links, the “Tools” function is no longer available. If you just click on your main bookmarks as a whole the “Tools” function is available and a single-click allows you to export quickly.

Export Google Bookmarks

Now I’ve begun looking at other options for managing my internet favorites. I’m nowhere close to relying on the bookmarks being stored locally on my machine.
I’ve come across another wish item for IE7 or browsers in general.
If I’ve added a website to my “Favorites”, why isn’t it automatically trusted? Maybe not even automatically, but when I add it maybe I’m prompted to also “Trust” this site. Why should i have to add sites to two separate places if I use them daily. Wouldn’t you think if I used something daily I’d trust it?

I may have just found my favorite feature of all for IE7. The “Add Tab Group…” and “Open Tab Group..” feature. I regularly open the same group of websites everyday when I start up my computer:

Yahoo! Mail
Gmail
Bloglines
iWon
Fox Fantasy Sports

I also regularly open all of the my Admin panels to WordPress at the same time, or all of my stats pages at the same time. This little tool alone is going to save me a large number of clicks and mouse movements every day. I LOVE IT!
