At present the most visible use of RSS Feeds is to send out the latest news and blog posts to subscribers: This is what we see everyday. There are of course other uses. And one of them is to use it as a marketing tool. Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based software company WrapMail Inc. has developed a software that allows emails to have borders or “wraps” that can display pictures or ads – similar to what we now see at websites. The software was designed to be used for marketing, advertising and promotion. One of its features is that it uses RSS to update the “wraps”. The company offers the service to corporate clients and consultants. If you want to see how this works you can try it for free at MyWrapMail.com. A twist in the story happened recently when the company announced that it will begin placing free Amber Alerts on corporate email. An Amber Alert is a public notification about a child’s abduction and the program has been successful in recovering more than 324 abducted children in the United States. The Amber Alert will be placed at the bottom of the customer wrap and will be updated using RSS – both as a marketing tool and as public service. It would be interesting to see the other uses of RSS at present and in the future.

Is this to make people more interested in Windows Vista? Perhaps. It is part of the new graphics technology introduces with Windows Vista.

Here is part of what Microsoft has to say:

Using technology developed by Microsoft, the applications enable an enhanced on-screen reading experience by combining the “look and feel” of traditional print media with the advantages of interactivity previously reserved for the Web. These new applications support a range of features, such as allowing users to navigate story lists, toggle between articles, move from one section to another, and view picture galleries. In addition, the reader can view the downloaded content while offline, then go back online for continuous updates as stories change.

And here’s part of what Margaret has to say about it:

The project is part of the software potentate’s push to show off certain features in the Vista operating system. Microsoft had previously released a version of the software designed for The New York Times.

In a nutshell, the bloggers who had comments on this approach were not impressed. Scobelizer seemed to sum it up:

“Google Reader is eating the lunch of this approach. Why? Cause we’ll put up with a little less readability in order to share items with other people, in order to see the information on multiple computers and platforms, and the ability to mash up the content with content from other services ala BlogLines, NewsGator, or Google Reader or other RSS aggregators.”

I’ve been subscribed to a techy newsletter for years. I’m not going to mention the name of it because things might have changed by now but when I subscribed to this newsletter, a different app was required for reading it. That app only displayed that newsletter. My reaction was the same – why would I want that? I’m subscribed via e-mail and am very happy with it that way. In fact, I’m not even going to see if they offer a regular feed. I am used to reading it in my e-mail. It’s the newsletter I’ve been subscribed to the longest (probably 4 or more years), it’s the only newsletter I get by e-mail, and I like it that way.

Let me know what you think about Microsoft’s latest attempt to push Vista and how you feel about a different app for a different ‘feed’

Ford, one of the staid, blue chips who isn’t having a good time of it right now, jumped on the bandwagon. They rightly think that someone who subscribes to their feed is and will continue to be a loyal customer. Besides TV commercials, what better way is there to get their brand in front of their customers every day?

And a quote I love, “2007 has been proclaimed “the year of RSS,” and automotive publishers and marketers alike should take it for a test drive.”

Stuart Watson, CTO and founder, explains “We can now deliver ads within RSS readers regardless of which article an individual subscriber is viewing and which reader he or she is using. Currently, subscribers use different readers, making it difficult to get ads delivered.

Alotta news about rss-vertising the past days. Syndicate IQ is announcing a new RSS Ad serving platform. Stuart Watson, CTO and founder, explains “We can now deliver ads within RSS readers regardless of which article an individual subscriber is viewing and which reader he or she is using. Currently, subscribers use different readers, making it difficult to get ads delivered. We can auto-format an ad based on the reader type as well as deliver ads to an article opened by an RSS subscriber.” The solution will be more broadly deployed in the coming weeks… Meanwhile FeedBurner has designed a self-service interface to make the ad-buying process easier for advertisers. The new self-service tools provide a quick way to bypass human contact and purchase media directly via the FeedBurner website. And last but not least, Pheedo is about to announce the launch of “Ads for Feeds”. This is a new service that will make it easy for website publishers to insert and track the ads into their feeds. This should be Pheedo’s big push to grab the publsher market in the emerging RSS advertising space, according to president Bill Flitter.

Well, looks like there is gonna be enough choice for publishers who wanna monetize their content. I’m very curious how this will evolve… Are we gonna get rss-ad-killers?

Everybody who has used Adsense will know this is a script which will return an ad that should be relevant for the content it’s in. The problem with the script is that this won’t work in (all) feedreaders. Qumana does this different and uses images for RSS ads. They also use these ad-images in normal blogposts and even in e-mail. This way it only uses straight HTML tags and can be showed anywhere.
For hard data they’re cranking 10 million impressions a month and increasing that constantly. With the Lycos and Blogware deals it sems they are even targeting for 100 million impressions. Clicks are on industry average, that’s about 0.2% and better. The click rate can be pretty variable depending on how well the person has matched the ad to their content…
