Many people see a big muscular guy and comment, “Wow I wouldn’t want to fight him.” As intimidating as stronger individuals may seem, strength translates to ability to fight as much as skinny means you can’t fight. It’s true brute strength is a great advantage in a skirmish, but because so many weight lifters neglect other facets of training, they’re lacking beyond muscles.

I’ll use Matt from Operacion Repo as an example again. Here’s a video of Matt in action:

As is the case in the video, Matt’s first reaction is almost always to wind up and push as hard as he can. (I know the show is staged but it’s still a good example.) The reason most big guys resort to pushing is to utilize their strength, which is strength. Aside from pushing, you can tell Matt isn’t very nimble or coordinated. So if someone throws a punch, he’s going to be confused and immediately try a headlock or some other strength based maneuver. He’s also going to be off balance because of his need to throw his weight and muscle into what he does.

Bench press doesn’t make you a better fighter. Nor do curls. You need to train for fighting. What makes you dangerous is when you combine raw strength with fighting attributes such as speed, agility, precision, and skill. Brock Lesnar exemplifies all of these attributes except skill. Lesnar has a tremendous combination of athleticism and power that along with a wrestling background and developing MMA skills has led him to be world champion.

Many weight lifters and power lifters train their muscles to do only one thing: Lift. So while there muscles grow and grow and eventually become huge, they lose mobility, quickness, coordination, and flexibility. This leaves a lot of heavy lifters with a lot of pushing power but not much else.

First bout of the night is Dustin Hazelett vs. Diego Saraiva. Hazelett takes the first round after dominating from his feet. Second round too seemingly goes to Hazelett who dominates Saraiva, who left an impression with a flurry late in the round. Back and forth round yet again but this one could go either way. Dustin Hazelett def. Diego Saraiva via Unanimous Decision (all three cards 30-27 Hazelett).
Next up is Sam Hoger vs. Lyoto Machida. Lyoto is dominating Hoger early on taking him down <strike>twice</strike> three times in the first round. Easy first round decision for Machida, now he just has to get more aggressive or at least remain consistent over the last 2 rounds to secure the win. Second round is much like the first. When is Hoger gonna stop trying for these legs. Anyways Lyoto lands some solid, solid hits in the round easily taking it yet again. Barring something unforeseen Machida has this one sealed.

Same old, Same old. Machida takes it to the mat yet again then gets the mount with Hoger taking the match back to their feet with a decent reversal. Back on their feet Lyoto continues the assault. Judges? Lyoto Machida def. Sam Hoger via Unanimous Decision (all three cards 30-27 Lyoto). Next up is Frankie Edgar vs. Tyson Griffin.

Frankie Edgar gets the first takedown of the round but Griffin gets back up and returns the favor. Unable to do much the match goes back to their feet and Edgar gets a solid takedown then gets into half guard to land so blows to Griffin. First round goes to Edgar. Second round is really in the air. Griffin starts it off with some strong blows but Edgar takes him down but both are back up really quick. Griffin takes Edgar off his feet this time and after scrapping on the mat Edgar counters with solid hits. Third round is really gonna be a sway round in this fight.

Do I smell an upset? Griffin gets smoked early in the last round but comes on strong late to try for an attempted submission but to no avail. Edgar gets out and gets more blows in on Griffin. 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 for Frankie Edgar. Frankie Edgar def. Tyson Griffin via Unanimous Decision for the upset win.

Bam! What you just heard was Jorge Rivera getting knocked out by Terry Martin 14-seconds into the bout. He took him to the mat quick, landed some solid hits, and Rivera was out like a light. Terry Martin def. Jorge Rivera via TKO. This concludes the undercard matches.

For him to have a strong showing next Thursday Clay will need to be on his toes and have a strong submission defense. He will need to throw some solid punches and break Din Thomas down so he can take the match to the mat and get the submission.

The match went three rounds with Thomas coming out on the winning end of a unanimous decision.

He appeared yet again at UFC 39 to take on Caol Uno in the first round of a lightweight tourney. Thomas lost to the Japanese MMA star by unanimous decision. At UFC 41 Din faced Matt Serra. Thomas came out on top via split decision after three rounds. This fight is remembered by many because one of the judges mixed up their points causing Serra to initially be called the winner only to have the decision reversed giving Din the win.

His last UFC tilt came at the previously mentioned Ultimate Fighter 4 when Thomas beat Clementi in the second round via rear naked choke.

Out of his 18 victories 5 came by KOs, 10 by submissions, and the other 3 via decisions. Although he is considered to be well rounded a majority of his victories have come from submissions so keep a keen eye on his ability to take advantage of his opponent. Very few of his winning bouts have gone the full three rounds so if things seem to be going that way Din way be in trouble.

Thomas will be looking to prove his status in the UFC after winning his last bout at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 4 finals.

Despite having an overwhelmingly losing record Pointon is known for his willingness to fight. Pointon has been out of the Octagon for nearly 8 months since his loss in the Ultimate Fighter finale. After having lost his last 2 bouts he will be eager to get back on the winning side of things.

Among his strengths “The Gladiator” is tough with strong striking and kicking skills. His weakness is his submission defense. For a win Pointon will need to stay off the mat and keep opponent Rich Clementi standing up and toe-to-toe. If Clementi gets a chance for the submission this fight may be done early but if it goes too long Pointon will have the advantage. Pointon will go into his Fight Night 8 bout as the underdog but could pull out a win with his toughness.

In the bout, his last UFC and MMA fight, Rich fell to Din Thomas also to a Rear Naked Choke.

Clementi is a well rounded fighter earning 9 of his 23 wins by knockout and 9 others by submission. 5 of his fights were won by decision. In his losses he has been knocked out just once with another 5 losses coming via submission. His other 5 losses came via decisions. He has lost his last two bouts, one via decision and one via submission, but strung together 9 wins before the losses.

Rich has bounced around several different leagues including most recently Reality Combat Fighting. Clementi is a well rounded fighter but needs to stay on his feet and strike to get the win. He is a well rounded fighter but vulnerable to submissions and will probably need to stay on his feet to get the win.
