If you avidly play poker, you need to keep a poker log of how much money you are making and losing. If you don’t have a log there is no way of actually knowing how good you are besides your memories here and there. I suggest you write down 1) how much you bought in for, 2) how much you won or lost 3) the place you played poker, 4) who you played with and their level of skill and 5) your honest impression of how you played, 6) any rake or fee you had to pay on top of your buy-in(s) and how you got out (bad beat, no cards, etc.).

When you have this poker log, it will take the variance out of your individual game plays and show you how good you really are. Many people fall victim to tunnel vision and only remember the money won when the reality is the losses they excuse away are deleting their earnings. With records, the numbers will not lie. If you’re bleeding too much money, you may even have to stop playing for awhile. After 15 or more games, the chart is going to give you an increasingly accurate picture of where you stand in your skill and finance level of poker. The more games you play, the more removed variance will be from your record. You may be surprised at who you are.
