Biking
Enjoy the summer sun by biking. Whether you are riding on the city streets or through the hills, you can get in a get in a good workout by biking. Consider joining a riding group in your area. Most major cities have a bicycle association or bike riding groups.

Swimming
As I mentioned in a previous post, swimming is a popular exercise, particularly in the summer. Head to the pool at your local YMCA or health club. Swimming laps every day is a great alternative for a low-impact, full body aerobic workout.

But pools aren’t just for getting a tan and relaxing, swimming is actually a great way to stay fit. People of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy swimming. It’s a low-impact aerobic exercise that takes the stress off leg joints, in comparison to walking, jogging or running.

Another benefit of swimming is that it can provide an allover total body workout. If you are overweight or haven’t exercised in a while, ease yourself into a swimming routine by starting out slowly.

Start by swimming two days a week and break often. Slowly increase your weekly distance, adding 5-10% each week.

Use a variety of different strokes to avoid getting bored and work out different sets of muscles. Take lessons at your local gym or YMCA to help improve your technique.

Time yourself every workout. Like with other exercise programs, set short-term and long-term goals for speed.

Consider joining a U.S. Masters Swimming group in your area for camaraderie and competition.

Enjoy swimming and get fit!

If exercise is almost non-existent in your life, it’s time to jump start your fitness routine. Half the battle is getting started. Once you get into the habit, you’ll find it gets easier and easier every day. The first thing you need to do is get moving. It doesn’t matter how or why. A sedentary lifestyle leads to weight gain and other health problems. These quick tips are easy ways to get started on the road to being fit and healthy.

Image: sxc.hu

Don’t Drive When You Can Walk
Make it a rule in your household. Never drive when you can walk. If you need to go to the store right around the corner, put on your walking shoes and get going.

Pick a Bad Parking Spot
When the rest of shoppers are clamoring for a spot near the door, do the opposite. Pick the worst parking spot you can and make the trek.

Take the Stairs
Skip the elevator and escalator whenever you can and take the stairs. Even if you can only take the stairs down when you first start, that’s better than nothing. Soon, you will be skipping up flights of stairs with ease.

Make Dessert a Special Occasion
Sweets and other desserts are not something you should eat every day. Instead of making dessert an after-meal routine, reserve it for special occasions. This is an easy way to cut out empty calories.

Ditch the Soda and Beer
Stock up on water, unsweetened iced tea, diet soda and other light drinks. Sugared sodas and beer don’t offer anything but calories and unwanted carbs.

15 Minutes
If an hour long sprint on the treadmill seems impossible, that’s because it is (at first). But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t exercise at all. Start out with 15 minutes a day of aerobic exercise of some sort — walking, jogging, swimming, biking, whatever you can do. At the end of the week, add five minutes. For the following week, do 20 minutes a day, then add another five minutes. You’ll be up to 45-60 minutes a day in no time.

You never know what things life may throw your way. Sometimes they interrupt your routine and get you off of your fitness track. Sometimes injury gets you down or you just plain get out of the habit. Whatever the situation may be, it seems that it’s not always easy to get back in to the swing of things, especially if you’ve allowed yourself to pack on a little extra weight.

Image: Newscom

When jumping back in the a good fitness routine I have found it best not to jump right back in head first. Dip your toes in the water, take baby steps and don’t over-do it. Many people want to shed off the weight quickly and that is never the best way. They jump in to the gym and go at it full force for the first time in awhile. They wake up the next morning and want to swear off the gym for the rest of their lives. Sometimes you don’t even have to go all out to have sore muscles. It can just be the fact that you haven’t put them to good use in awhile.

Depending on exactly how sore your muscles are or how hard you pushed yourself, sore muscles can stick around for a few days. Sometimes the best way to alleviate sore muscles is to keep them loose by doing more exercise. Don’t over-do it again, but just go for a less intense workout and if you keep with your routine, sore muscles will be a thing of the past. Well, almost.

Legs have always been my kryptonite. Whenever train legs by doing squats I will be sore for sometimes up to a week. To keep my legs muscle loose and to prevent myself from walking around Frankenstein’s monster, I do series of body weight squats throughout the day. This is the only way that I have found to keep them loose and keep me from giving up on squats. I like doing squats, I love the way it makes me feel both during and shortly after, but not the next day. Plus it’s a great calorie burner.

Next time you go to get back in to a fitness program, take it easy at first and build yourself back up to speed.
