Sam Cassell Retires, Joins Wizards Staff

After being a late first round pick in the 1993 NBA Draft, not much was expected out of Sam Cassell. But the point guard out of Florida State with the massive amount of confidence more than made a name for himself. Cassell had a great career — but now it’s over.
On Thursday, Cassell retired from the NBA and took a job with the Washington Wizards to become an assistant coach. The Wizards also hired Randy Wittman on Thursday as an assistant coach. Both Cassell and Wittman will be on new head coach Flip Saunders staff.

Flip Saunders is the New Coach for Wizards

The Washington Wizards now know who their head coach will be for the 2009-10 NBA season. Even though this season hasn’t ended yet, multiple sources are confirming that Flip Saunders has agreed to a contract that will make him the next coach for the Wizards.
Saunders will reportedly sign a deal that will pay him an estimated $18 million over the next four years. Expect the hiring to become official shortly after the season comes to an end on Wednesday. Currently, the Wizards are being coached by Ed Tapscott. Tapscott will likely return to his position within Washington’s front office.
