College Football Week Three 2009 in Review

No longer do we have a top ten with perfected records. This week, Oklahoma bust into the number 10 spot with a blemished season. The rest of the AP top 10 are still unmarred after week three:

Florida
Texas
Alabama
Mississippi
Penn State
California
LSU
Boise State
Miami
Oklahoma

What’s significant to note is who is not there anymore. And really, that boils down to my favorite team to bash, USC.
Sorry, USC fans. This was supposed to be an easy week for you. The Trojans took on Washington, and after a week at Ohio State’s horseshoe, everyone thought that this would be a relaxing game. Only Matt Berkley couldn’t start, so …read more

College Football Week Three 2009 Preview

We’re getting to the point where most teams are actually starting to play some real games now. I say “most” because my beloved Penn State is playing Temple this weekend. You know when Temple last beat PSU? 1941. I mean, they haven’t played every year…but still.
I digress. Let’s check out the AP Top 10 this week:

Florida
Texas
USC
Alabama
Mississippi
Penn State (actually, they’re also #5, it was a tie)
BYU
California
LSU
Boise State

All of the top ten teams are still undefeated, but that’s not surprising since many of them had super easy games the past two weeks – or no game at all (Mississippi already had their …read more

College Football Week One 2009 Preview

Ah, my life is complete once again. College football, how I’ve missed you. Sure, we have the draft in the spring, but it just isn’t even to satiate my yearning for the clash of helmets on the field.
Week One is usually not very exciting, unfortunately. My favorite team, Penn State, plays Akron, so although this game means they’ll likely be able to keep a high rank, it won’t actually be that fun to watch. Actually, I don’t even think the game is being televised… Maybe I’m selling Akron short. *shrug*
In any case, despite all of the easy non-conference games we’re …read more

Press Sues NCAA and FSU

Press Sues NCAA and FSU

On Monday, the Associated Press and a number of other Florida media outlets banded together to sue the NCAA and Florida State. Recently, FSU received a response about their academic cheating scandal, and the school chose to keep these documents private while responding themselves. However, the press says that this is a blatant violation of Florida’s open government laws.
Everyone wants to know what’s in those documents. The NCAA had previous annonced that they’d strip coach Bobby Bowden of a number of wins, and this documnt is in response to an appeal of that decision. Bowden’s in the running to become …read more

FSU Sanctions Response Kept Secret

Florida State has finally received a response from the NCAA about their appeal of sanctions from an academic cheating scandal…but they’ve kept that response a secret. They now have 15 days to respond again to the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions, and the school says that their response will be made public, at least in part.
FSU admits that the cheating occurred and they aren’t challenging the the loss of scholarships in 10 sports and a four-year probation for the dirty deeds. However, they are challenging the part of the sanctions that would strip coach Bobby Bowden of 14 of the school’s …read more

Bowden: “My Days are Limited”

Bobby Bowden hasn’t officially announced his retirement plans, but he alluded to the fact that he’ll only be around for 2009 and 2010. Bowden is one of the winningest coaches in major college football (second only to Penn State’s Joe Paterno – right now, at least, since they’re pretty much neck and neck), and he’s beloved on the Florida State campus…and that’s why he won’t talk about his retirement date.
“My days are limited, but I still enjoy what I do. I would rather walk off quietly. That’s the reason I won’t say when I’m going to get out because people …read more

JoePa Stands Behind Bowden’s Wins

Florida State may have to retroactively forfeit up to 14 wins as the NCAA investigates an academic cheating scandal. While the school has admitted that some of their students cheated and are accepting some of the NCAA sanctions, head coach Bobby Bowden has said that the school will appeal any punishments that will strip victories.
This might not matter much to Joe Paterno of Penn State, but he and Bowden are in a dead heat for number of victories among major college coaches. Paterno currently has 383 wins, while Bowden has 382. He’d only have 368 is the wins are stripped, …read more

Champs Sports Bowl Result:
Florida State 42, Wisconsin 13

Florida State running back Carlton Jones (33) attempts to evade the out stretched hands of Wisconsin defensive lineman Dan Moore (45).
Champs Sports Bowl Summary: I’m a Big Ten girl, and unless Ohio State is playing, I always cheer as such. Wisconsin didn’t even have a chance, though. I could have guessed that, but I didn’t think it would be a total blow out! Yeesh.
For the record, Florida State is the first ACC team to …read more

Congrats, Myron Rolle

Congrats, Myron Rolle

The “dumb jock” view is perpetual, but some college athletes are breaking that stereotype. BCS Frenzy wants to offer a warm “congratulations” to Florida State safety Myron Rolle.
Before taking the field against Maryland last weekend, Rolle interviewed for and won a Rhodes scholarship. He was a little late for the game, but that decision definitely paid off!
If he chooses not to enter the NFL draft, Rolle will receive a full scholarship for 2-3 years at Oxford University in England to pursue his neurosurgeon studies.
No matter what he decides, I’m sure he’ll have a bright future. Again, congratulations …read more
