If you want to do more than just buy (or receive) those faintly naff Christmas presents, then 2 charities may have an answer for you.

Oxfam in the UK is running a heavy poster and TV campaign called Oxfam Unwrapped, encouraging you to send send presents such as dung, condoms or loos to places around the world. A nice ad and there’s a fun set of outtakes available on the site.

The Send to a Friend app on the site has a nice twist, sending a funny little personalised note that should have you smiling. They’ve not made it easy to share the content though, with the video on the site not embeddable and the Oxfam YouTube account only having the outtakes.

Another source for presents is the Send a Cow scheme. No big campaign behind this, but you do get a nice sticker if you buy a present.

Finally, if you’ve already got all your presents, you can spend some time on Free Rice, looking at the ads whilst improving your vocabulary at the same time. This site has got some buzz and traction probably due to the simplicity of the idea. For every word you identify the correct meaning, 20 grains of rice are donated. (the number doubled today) The money is coming from the paid advertising on the site. Looking at the increase in rice donated, this is something that spreads well.
