But apparently they have kissed and made up. Sheffield said, “Things happen and we react to them, and sometimes you act correctly and sometimes you don’t, and you move on from it. At the end of the day, none of it matters.”

Hey if Gary Sheffield and Barry Bonds can be best pals again, it gives me hope for any of my goofy friendships that have fallen by the wayside.

Sheffield’s homer actually was very helpful for the Mets. With New York trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh, Sheffield’s solo shot tied the score. In the bottom of the ninth, the Mets got the winning run when Luis Castillo hit an infield single and scored Carlos Delgado from third base.

The 40-year-old Sheffield has already been through a lot in the 2009 season. Before the season began, he was released by the Detroit Tigers. After flirting with a host of teams, Sheffield decided to sign with the Mets.

Not only was that Sheffield’s first homer of the season, it was also his first hit. In seven previous at-bats, he had walked three times and struck out twice.

The most interesting aspect of this transaction will be how the Mets find at-bats for Sheffield. In the past, he has said that he wouldn’t be happy with a reserve role. With the Mets, they could possibly mix him into the outfield rotation and also play him a little bit at first base.

Sheffield’s first home run for the Mets will be a significant one. With 499 homers, Sheffield needs just one more long ball to join the exclusive 500 club.

The Mets will be the eighth team of Sheffield’s career. He has previously played for the Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees and the Tigers.

Teams that were thought to be possible Sheffield destination were the Braves, Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies.

Sheffield, who has 499 career homers, indicated that he will quickly sign with another team. In fact, he said that his career is far from over. One time that has supposedly shown early interest in Sheffield is the Philadelphia Phillies.

Last season, Sheffield was slowed by a number of injuries and had arguably his worst season of the last decade. He finished the year with a batting average of .225 with 19 homers and 57 RBI.

In his career, Sheffield has played with seven teams: the Milwaukee Brewers, the San Diego Padres, the Florida Marlins, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Atlanta Braves, the New York Yankees and the Tigers. The best season of his career was in 1996 when he played for the Marlins and hit .314 with 42 home runs, 120 RBI, 16 stolen bases and had an on-base percentage of .465.

Expect Sheffield and his always lively personality to end up somewhere within the next two weeks.

2. We made it on television . . . every time they used the right infield camera. Really! Yours truly is the blondie with the red jacket looking at, you know, not the game. (The scoreboard, presumably):

Yeah, we know that has nothing to do with clinching a playoff spot. But wouldn’t you be excited if you were on television chewing gum and looking fatter than you really are? We thought so! (Kudos and invocations to the other half of Team Revision for the screen capture and a tape of the game!).

3. We passed on Gary Sheffield’s message to the Indians. Just kidding. Sorry, this had nothing to do with the wild card berth, either. However, we were close enough to Grady Sizemore to whisper in it in his ear. Well, more like shout it over four rows of people. But still.

4. The warm and fuzzy feeling that came over us, even though the air temp was a nippy 40-something degrees, when we realized that New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is probably out of a job . . . was a Schadenfreude moment if there ever was one!

5. Alcohol. It started pre-game with reader Prospero’s absinthe at the Eastern Standard, which ensured that we’d see a good game no matter what. (Ah, we just had a couple of sips just to say we did. You could get trashed on that stuff in a hurry, though). It ended with a post-game martini at Sonsie. The champagne celebration after the win? Absolutely priceless. We avoided getting sprayed (just barely), but so much bubbly was flowing and/or being doused that we left inhaling that happy, happy scent.

Wait, you can stop clutching your heart now. That “Man of the Year” part was hypothetical.

But what about the Detroit Tigers slugger’s feelings for his former agent? To say there’s “no love loss there” would be an understatement along the lines of “A-Rod needs to work on his delivery.” (Yes, we’re talking jokes, not throwing mechanics).

The decidely-past-expired-milk relationship concerns the 3-year, $39M contract Sheffield signed with the New York Yankees in 2003. Apparently Boras wants to get his sticky fingers on some would like a piece of the not-yet-stale pie. Sheffield says he repped himself for the deal and Boras says nuh-uh.

Sheffield said Boras is a “bad person,” and is ready to make like a canary and sing. He isn’t worried about the MLB consequences, either. Per USA Today:

“It ain’t going to be pretty . . .No fine is going to be big enough. No suspension is going to be long enough.”

Scott, you’d be advised not to take any food or drink from Mr. Sheffield, even if he throws you a Man of the Year dinner.
