Ashes player of the series?
You decide. I’ve put a poll up to the right of this post. Who will it be? I added some English players to the list, more as a joke than anything else, but I have to say I was struggling to even think of names who might have been considered for it.
Inevitably it will be an Australian player, and the BBC has it tipped to be Stuart Clark. My gut feeling is that it will be Shane Warne, but only because as the retiring golden boy, the powers that be will feel obliged to choose him, irrespective of the snub …read more
Melbourne : Day 1 : Too much pressure (for England)
About 6am this morning I got a text message from a good friend of mine:
Mate, am watching the cricket at the MCG. Can’t believe what a shocker. Hope you’ve had a good Xmas. Annabelle is still super hot.
Despite being incredibly jealous at my non-cricket-loving friend who was both watching the cricket at the MCG with 90,000 other people and also spending the day with Annabelle, who is, apparently, still as hot today as she was when I first met her some 10 years ago at a small house party in Melbourne, I was inclined to agree with him. I was, …read more
Warne to quit after Ashes?
Rumour has it that Australian legend Shane Warne is set to quit his International career after the Ashes. He has already stopped playing one day cricket to prolong his Test shelf-life but now it seems he’s going to stop Test cricket as well. He will hold a press conference tomorrow is said to confirm his decision. And despite claims to the contrary, certain pundits are already referring to Warne in the past tense. Rumours are also circulating that McGrath will do the same. Should such a thing happen, cricket will see two of its greatest ever bowlers step down.
I’d be …read more
Ashes backlash begins
Wow, there are some angry people out there. No more than a nanosecond after England snatched defeat in the 2nd test of the Ashes, and the hands are out and the gloves most definitely are off. Visit any sports website, news website, forum, messageboard, chatroom and pretty much any blog and the vultures are already tearing in to anything and everything England. People are simply up in arms over the debacle. Ben Dirs, live commenting on the match, finished with:
Jones drops an inside edge off Anderson. I’m not bothered, I don’t even like cricket. Hussey then swings Anderson away for …read more
Adelaide: Day 1: Slow n steady
On a peach of a batting track, England made a steady start to the second test. Strauss made an uncharacteristic mistake failed again, chipping a slow one off Stuart Clark to Damien Martyn. Alastair Cook looked good for his 27 in an hour and a half, but after doing all the hard work let his concentration lapse and wafted at an ever-so-slightly wide one, again from Clark. Collingwood and Bell then steadied the ship, and when Bell departed for 60, KP joined the party and added another 50 to England’s card. Collingwood ended the day 2 away from his century, …read more
Comedy Ashes quotes: #1 Glenn McGrath’s manboobs
Maybe this will make a series, or maybe this just won’t be bettered. In Ponting’s post-Brisbane gloat, when discussing Glenn McGrath:
“He had his knockers leading in to this Test match and I know he was keen to prove them wrong”
(emphasis added, from link)
Glenn McGrath’s knockers? Those will be his manboobs from being old and a bit saggy? And he had his knockers… now he doesn’t? Was his sore heel just a ruse to cover the pain of last-minute surgery? And to whom was he proving what wrong? To his boobs? That he didn’t need them? Or to everyone else …read more
Someone pinch me – Australia lose
Well, well, well. The ICC Champions Trophy just got interesting. After England got stuffed against India earlier this week, things were beginning to look a bit hopeless ahead of the Ashes warmup on Saturday. But goshdarnit if the group wasn’t just blown wide open as West Indies didn’t just pull down the Aussies’ pyjamas and spank Wipeout all over their bare naked tooshie.
A week away and…?
You’d think going away for a week might turn up something interesting to talk about. I’m not sure why you’d think that, but it’s possible you might think it. I certainly thought it. And maybe I’m being too critical, but it seems like a same old run-of-the-mill cricketing week has passed. For starters, England thrashed Pakistan in the 2nd Test at Old Trafford. I’m not saying England thrashing Pakistan is typical OR run of the mill, but the responses to it have been typical. Hurrah for the emphatic win, certainly – Alastair Cook and Ian Bell both posted more centuries …read more
