Round 2 Wrap

All 1’s, 2’s, and 3’s are still breathing, though some easier than others. Gus Johnson is God, still. And Lazar Hayward is probably still sick from his booboo, his spectacle, his stumble.

Most Exciting Game
Slim pickings. Gonzaga v. Western Kentucky was dynamite though. Mendez-Valdez and Slaughter hit some tough shots but at the finish the defense was just scattered as all hell, allowing Demetri Goodson to essentially take a h-o-r-s-e shot for the win. Jeremy Pargo, the cat I thought was running the ball up the court there at the end, causing me to wrongly shout ‘freakin Pargo’, was feeling it …read more

Jason Whitlock is only slightly tolerable

Mr. Whitlock is a widely respected columnist for the Kansas City Star. He has won some cool journalism awards and stuff blah blah he is a pretty good writer yada yada yada.
Whitlock wrote an article for ‘FoxSports on MSN’ yesterday.
“NCAA Truths” he calls it.
I call it a bunch of mumbo jumbo. Ok, only some of it.
Whitlock’s words in bold
The Gonzaga Bulldogs are not my sleeper team. They’re my pick to win the whole thing.
Jason is trying to drum up some discussion and controversy on his article, no person (unless they’re a Zags …read more

Cleveland (State) Rocks!

What’s gotten into Cleveland?
First, Cleveland State punches it’s ticket to the Big Dance by punching Associated Press number 16 ranked Butler in the face 57-54 for the Horizon League tournament championship. Cleveland State (25-10) is dancing for the first time in 23 years.
Now the question is, will the selection committee take two teams from the Horizon League to the Big Dance?
I’m also watching the Cleveland Cavaliers lose to the Clippers right now. It’s late in the first half, and I’m sure once the second half gets underway, LeBron James will restore order.
DePaul’s win against Cincinnati in the first round …read more

Division I Rankings for March 9, 2009

You know what they say – the more things change, the more they stay the same.
North Carolina was the consensus number one pick at the beginning of the season and held it for the first seven weeks of the season. The Tar Heels (27-3) lost that ranking eight weeks ago after an upset loss to Boston College.
And after a nice win over 79-71 win against Duke yesterday to sweep the season series, and with last week’s number one Connecticut’s 70-60 lost to Pittsburgh, the Tar Heels find themselves back where they started.
The win gave North Carolina its 17th Atlantic Coast …read more

Latest Division I Polls For January 26

Ok Duke fans, you are finally where you belong – at number one!
You sat around, waited patiently and won all but one of your games. You did while pretenders like those other two schools in your state and Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh?) held the top ranking this season.
So here you are at the top of both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. And it’s the first time in three seasons you’ve held the top spot.
And to add insult to injury, you solidified the number one ranking by clobbering an Atlantic Coast Conference cream puff in Maryland by 41 points over the …read more

Gonzaga falls on face for second straight game

The Zags are teetering on the edge of total destruction right about now. 3 losses in a row for only the second time in the last 8 years.
First it was a wild overtime loss against the Connecticut Huskies in a tournament like atmosphere in Seattle’s Key Arena back on December 20th. Not a fall on your face kind of loss by any means. UConn can ball with the best of them.

The second loss (face smashing begins) was at the hands of Portland State, a team that had not beaten a Top 25 club since reinstating its basketball …read more

Latest Division I Polls For December 29

It’s the last polls of 2008 ladies and gents!
Not much change in this week’s rankings until you get to the bottom half and see teams like Gonzaga and Xavier tumbling after losses last week.
My question is, of the remaining undefeated teams, (North Carolina 12-0, Connecticut 11-0, Pittsburgh 12-0, Oklahoma 12-0, Wake Forest 11-0 and I’ll even throw in Clemson 12-0 and Minnesota 12-0) which one will flinch and lose a game first?
My money is on anyone ranked below North Carolina. Conference is about to start and all of these teams are vulnerable.
North Carolina is 12-0 and all 12 wins …read more

5′6 Dominguez lets em’ fly

In Portland State’s upset over Gonzaga on Tuesday evening, Jeremiah Dominguez (a one time Portland Pilot) scored a season high 25 points, stemming mainly from the 7 long balls he drained.
Zag’s point guard Jeremy Pargo struggled a bit, scoring just 11 on 3-8 shooting.
Very recently I have noticed a lot of players under 5′9 who are seemingly doing great things for their respective programs. Or maybe I’m just now noticing smaller players as equally as I notice the giants when scanning through unfamiliar rosters and such.
Either way, these guys should be commended. All too often I hear people …read more

Thanksgiving Day Hoops

Looking for something to watch on Thanksgiving Day as you have that second and third helping of homemade yams and stuffing?
You think that it’s time for the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions to stop playing on Thanksgiving Day (especially Detroit! They’re awful!).
And college football doesn’t float your boat? Please! It doesn’t even have a playoff system (at least Division I doesn’t).
The NBA and NHL? Talk to me after their all-star breaks.
There’s is hope for all of us with plenty of college basketball on television to fall asleep to after that big dinner.
There are three tournaments on Thanksgiving Day featuring …read more

Duke Fans and Bobby Knight Make the All-Ego Sports Team

A pretty funny column in today’s Los Angeles Times by Chris Erskine as he names his All-Ego Sports Team.
College basketball is represented by the Duke Student Section on the first team, and Bobby Knight on the second team.
Erskine said this about the Duke Student Section.
“Listen up, you little punks. Pride in your team is one thing. But you’ve helped turn college hoops into a rancorous R-rated spectacle, from which mothers shield their young ‘uns. I guess sportsmanship wasn’t an essay question on the SAT’s.”
And this about Bobby Knight.
“Humanitarian. Destined to be the first male cast member on “The View.”
I’d like …read more
