Google took another step today into making its Google Apps product more appealing with integrating security, storage and compliance services from Postini. Postini was <a href="http://www.searchengineherald.com/2007/07/09/google-buys-security-firm-for-625-million-will-it-help/”>purchased by Google over the summer (July) especially for this matter and for now will be integrated into Google Apps Premiere Edition.

The move Wednesday is the latest in a series of forays Google is making into the enterprise space. Google Apps Premier Addition goes up against established enterprise messaging services, most prominently Lotus Notes from IBM and Microsoft Exchange. Google Apps includes a suite of services, such as GMail, Docs, Calendar and GTalk, which are available for business use. However, with Postini, Google Apps Premier Edition will now have a large customer base from which to draw.

Google obviously realizes its weaknesses and is making moves to improve its offerings based on that. This seems to be a smart move on their behalf will most definately help them capture marketshare.

According to several reports, Google is set to acquire Postini, a firm specializing in securing all forms of communication from email to IM. As a result of the acquisition, Postini will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Google and will join forces with the Google Apps division in strengthening their security.

“With this transaction, we’re reinforcing our commitment to delivering compelling hosted applications to businesses of all sizes. With the addition of Postini, our apps are not just simple and appealing to users — they can also streamline the complex information security mandates within these organizations,” said Eric Schmidt, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Google.

According to Google, over 1000 small-businesses sign up for Google Apps every day, however, larger size businesses tend to stir away due to security concerns, concerns which will now be addressed.

And I say, is it really security or is it Google holding your secrets on their hard drive? With privacy concerns on the net becoming more and more mainstream, Google is ways away from the trust required by some of these big corporations.
