There’s Always More to Learn

Well, based on our past conversation, and watching this feat of amazingness last night, I’ve decided to give running another shot.
I decided that since I know for a fact now that it’s a mental block that keeps me from running, I can’t use it as an excuse anymore. So, since this is summer in Seattle, which means it was raining, I popped in Accepted, one of the most underrated and hilarious movies ever, cranked up the volume and hopped on the treadmill.

Rachel asked another question:
I did gymnastics, cheerleading, track (hurdles) and a little soccer throughout the years. I am so used to coaches giving me orders and telling me how to work out I feel so lost when I have to do it myself. I thought about getting a personal trainer to teach me how to train myself but well, I’m poor. Can you give me some advice on how you get your clients motivated after you get done with them?
I wrote a bit about motivating others here, and on Every Gym’s Nightmare as well, but I found this article that I think …read more
Q and A: One For Me and One For You, Dear Readers

Rachel sent me this question:
Can someone just not be “good” at running? I have tried and tried and tried for the last couple months to work up my endurance and speed and it just isn’t happening. I am lucky to get a ten minute mile and even then I do intervals (2 minutes running & 1 minute speed walking and even then I only get up to 3 miles). It never seems to get any easier. Do you have any suggestions on ways to work on endurance? I do elliptical and the bike sometimes but don’t feel like I worked out …read more

Always being one to shirk conformity (i only buy ONE starbucks a day and have never seen a single episode of The Hills, thank you) I’ve decided to cast away to oppressive bonds of organized Blog Carnivals and have decided to host my own! And you guys are invited!
Here’s how it works:
Post links to your favorite blog(s) and write a quick blurb about what the site is about. The only rule is, it has to be a personal site that is NOT yours.
I’ll kick it off with one of my favorites.

Q and A: How Long for Results?

I got this question from Danielle yesterday:
so I was wondering if you need to increase or decrease calories when trying to turn fat to muscle and how often/how much should you lift to tone and turn fat to muscle? And since I’m impatient how long should I wait to expect results?
This is one of those try-and-explain-evertyhing-about-working-out-in-one post questions, but I’ll give it a go.
First of all, you can’t turn fat into muscle.

Take a look at this video first.
Also, that woman with the burger looks EXACTLY like an old roomate of mine, but that’s besides the point.
MMMMM, makes you want a burger, yeah?

I check people out at the gym. Both males and females. Not in the traditional, creepster sense, but in genuine admiration.
The other day I was on the elliptical and spotted a girl with AMAZING legs. You know the ones: those thin, toned, runner legs I would do anything for, except, you know, run many, many miles a day.
This is the point when my thoughts can go one of two ways. I can think of how much I hate my legs, how I could never get those legs even if I tried and how I secretly wished that her car would …read more
There is Officially a Pill For Everything

Apparently I live under a rock, because I just read about this new exercise pill over at Healthbolt.
It mimics the cardiovascular effects of exercise in rats- increasing their endurance and lowering their body fat.
The effects of this pill (if proven safe for humans) will be helpful for people with high cardiovascular risk, diabetes and any other physical ailment that could prevent people from working out.

Your body is designed to protect itself. If you don’t eat, your body slows down all of its function to conserve energy and help you live longer.
You’ve got eyebrows and eyelashes to keep stuff from getting into your eyes.
You feel pain so that you are aware that you are injured in some way and to avoid injuring yourself further.
Self preservation- its where it’s at.

Susan’s article, Confessions of a Somewhat Enlightened Material Girl, has been featured on the 20th edition of the Carnival Improving Life.
Don’t get too excited, its a blogging carnival, so no rides or balloon animals, but there are a lot of great links to a lot of great sites, so stop working and get reading.
It says the article is from me, but that’s only cause I submitted it, Susan wrote it.
