Last week at the WAC media day, Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin made some derogatory comments (he used gay-bashing terms) about the Norte Dame football team. Although he was quick to apologize and even asked that his comments not be printed (yeah right), a lot of people are angry. Now, however, the coach faces punishment, which some are calling too harsh.

The WAC hasn’t yet announced what they’ll do about the incident, but the commissioners says that the options could include private reprimand, public reprimand, or game suspension according to WAC rules. The university has already announced McMackin’s punishment, which is as follows:

Forfeit of 30 days’ pay

Annual salary reduction of 7%

Community service with the campus’ LGBT community

That’s a pretty huge punishment, but at the same time, he’s the face of the football program at the school. Comments like what he said are unacceptable if, for no other reason, that he is part of Hawaii’s brand.

Do you think the coach’s punishment is too harsh?

Earlier today, Hawaii’s Greg McMackin fumbled over some words at the Western Athletic Conference media day, asking the media not to report on something he said. The comment in question? When talking about the Notre Dame and Hawaii banquet before the Hawaii Bowl last year, the coach said that the Irish performed a “little f****t dance” for the Warriors before they performed a traditional Hawaiian greeting dance called a shaka.

Ouch.

Greg McMackin Image: Newscom

McMackin later talked to the media about the statement, saying,

“I want to officially, officially apologize. Please don’t write that statement I said as far as Notre Dame. The reason is, I don’t care about Notre Dame. But I’m not a … I don’t want to come out and have every homosexual ticked off at me. You know what I mean. Because I don’t have any problem with homosexuals. But I apologize for saying that and I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t run that word.”

Fat chance, the reports are all over the place.

So my question for you all: Obviously, what the coach said was derogatory and wrong…but should the reporters have respected his wishes and kept the comment under wraps?

Hawaii Bowl Summary: I’m not a fan of Notre Dame, and I cheered for Hawaii in this game…but I knew it was a lost cause before the first snap. You know why Notre Dame and Hawaii played in this bowl? Because ND wasn’t going to get to play otherwise and because Hawaii was the only other team that could “travel” there economically.

I’m not a fan of Clausen, but he played well and broke the ND passing record with 401 passing yards and 5 touchdowns… but I mean, Hawaii isn’t exactly known for an awesome defense. The bottom line? No big surprises in this game. Notre Dame did end a 9-loss bowl streak, so that’s good. I guess. If you’re a Notre Dame fan. <img style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="315" alt="24 December 2008: Notre Dame running back Robert Hughes (33) tries to break free from Hawaii linebacker Adam Leonard.
I’m not.

Maybe I’m just stubborn, but I still like Hawaii.

Last night’s Sugar Bowl game against the Georgia Bulldogs was a complete and utter disaster. I’m not talking like “Ooops, I spilled coffee on my tie again.” I’m talking like “Ooops, I slept with my girlfriend’s sister last night after having too much to drink…and she’s pregnant…with twins…” When the final score is 41 – 10 in a major bowl game, it is THAT kind of fuck-up.

However, I will say one thing – Hawaii still showed a lot of heart. I’m not one to get all sappy (at least, not over football), but these guys made me a bit sentimental. Yes, they played like suck. Colt Brennen sucked last night. The whole offensive line sucked last night. The defense sucked last night. Even the special teams sucked last night.

But they did not give up…ever. That poor quarterback was sacked again and again and again, and he got up and played his heart out every time. When they got a late touchdown to raise their total points from 3 to 10, they celebrated. In the last quarter, when everyone knew that all hope was lost, they played. It wasn’t about winning anymore. It was about pride.

And I think that speaks a lot about the kind of team this is. Hawaii has a lot to be proud of.

For the record, I don’t think they were overrated. I think they were unprepared for the intensity of a bowl game.

In related news, Hawaii’s coach, Junes Jones, is apparently being wooed away to SMU. Will he leave now that Colty is gone? It’s likely (though I’m not sure he’ll go to SMU…who knows!)
