CableVision Bermuda Gets CNN HD, NFL Network HD

I guess when there’s hurricanes around, Bermuda folks have to stay inside. So why not have cable? Better yet, why not have that cable in HD? CableVision in Bermuda has announced the availability of CNN HD and NFL Network HD to subscribers for an additional $12 per month. Still, it’s better than your other options, especially from a quote:
“CableVision’s HD line-up is unmatched in Bermuda. We are the only ones offering HD and it just keeps getting better.”
Aka, unless you love your SD content, you’re screwed.

Rogers Degrading HD Quality Due to QAM

In another blow to the cable industry, primarily Canadian cable, Rogers Communications is going to be compressing HD video streams, thus degrading the quality of your HD programming. Here’s the list of channels affected:

HD PBS Buffalo
HD WGN
HD The Score
HD Showcase
HD National Geographic
HD Mpix
HD Discovery
HD MORE
HD TMN
HD NBC Seattle
HD SUN
HD RAP
HDA&E
HDCNN
HDNET

The reason why Rogers is compressing is ultimately due to capacity. Even with QAM and being able to put more channels in the same amount of space, Rogers is apparently unable to reserve enough bandwidth for other purposes. Digitalhome.ca brought up an interesting fact. Featured in this Gizmodo article (for the …read more

The folks over at DBSTalk have obtained a few screen captures of what is believed to be the new graphics package for ESPNews HD. We have been expecting ESPNews to go high-def sometime soon, but now with the screenshots being released (and they are some awesome looking screenshots), we can hopefully look forward to it coming towards the end of March. Now you’re plasma panel is going to have another logo burned into it.DBSTalk

ESPN Goes HD Down Under

I’ll spare everyone from my awful Aussie jokes, because I know Shai and Darren would be on me, so let’s just tell the story, shall we? ESPN, the sports mega-giant broadcasting company, is taking it’s HD content to the southern hemisphere, and it’s doing it in quite a big flare. In order to transfer the HD signal, ESPN HD Australia has to be transferred underwater, using an undersea fiber optic cable that has a 100 Mbps capacity, which still has capacity to provide additional programs to certain regions when needed. ESPNEWS HD is scheduled to go live March 30 and …read more

They’re Back! And in HD

The people you either love, or you love to hate are back, and in HD to boot. American Idol has kicked off their seventh season on Fox stations around the nation, and just in time. As the drought of shows are somewhat being replenished by various shows such as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the late night comedy shows returning as well, TV isn’t looking so bad. American Idol has finally given us some decent, if not entertaining reality show moments. Including the usual good and bad singers, although mostly the later, all of it is broadcasted in HD. …read more

IndyCar to Be Broadcasted in HD

Now that NASCAR has been in HD for a while, it’s time for other racing sports to join them, and the next racing sport is, IndyCar! Ok, so that didn’t get you excited? Well how about this: all the cameras, including “in-car cameras and those used in the pits” are HD as well, not to mention the cameras around the track. They had to spend some time and research developing a system of in-car cameras that wouldn’t affect the aerodynamics of the car, which would be really, really bad for the racer. Not to mention there would probably be lawsuits …read more

China’s Central TV goes HD in 2008

China’s Central TV goes HD in 2008

Starting on January 1, 2008 (that’s tomorrow, if you didn’t know), China’s Central TV is going to broadcast in HD, and starting their broadcast with over-the-air, while it was previously a cable-only channel. Those who want to watch CCTV over-the-air may have to buy a separate external set-top box to receive the signal. So the New Year will bring OTA HD and the Olympics in HD from Beijing, a good combination for those who are missing out.EngadgetHDCCTV

Speed in HD… The Racing Kind

For all you Speed Channel fans, or those looking for more HD content (I’m looking at you, DirecTV), February is the month for you. Not only will Speed have coverage of the 50th Daytona 500, but they are doing the coverage in high definition. They plan to start with more than 100 hours of HD content on February 7th, mainly covering the Daytona 500. Take into play that it won’t be cheap, considering there are more cameras and equipment that are used in NASCAR than in most other sports. Add that on to a 25% increase in production costs and …read more
