Expertise. You have expertise in a specific area – the technical part of your business. But you need someone with expertise in managing an office, getting a website set up, setting up your bookkeeping system, and more. If you can find a good general administrative-type person to do some of these things, you can concentrate on what you need to do.

Faster Start-up. The more people available to help, the faster your start-up. And faster start-up means saving money. You have more hands to do more tasks. For example, if you are ordering equipment, you can have your employee there to accept deliveries and check items off the list. Or the employee can be there to make sure the paint is the right color. You can’t be in many places at once, so having an employee can help you be in at least two.

Marketing Help. You need to get out and start marketing, and only you can do that. But there are lots of support-type jobs that someone can do to help: get speaking engagements set up, order marketing materials, write press releases,

Make You Look Bigger. Always look bigger than you are. If you are answering your own phone, it doesn’t sound as professional or important as having someone answer the business phone. Trust me, this makes a big impression on people, particularly if you are in a service busienss.

Protection. Having another person around the office just makes sense from a safety perspective. If you are alone, you are more vulnerable. I’m not just talking to women here; it’s good for everyone. If you are seeing clients/patients/customers in your office, it helps to have someone around in case someone wants to accuse you of something. I know, it is kind of sad that I even have to be talking about this, but that’s the reality.

What kind of employee do you want? I would suggest trying to find someone who has administrative experience. The person should be good with the phone and detail-oriented. If he/she has experience in setting up an office, that would be great. You may be able to find someone through a temp agency, or you may know someone who fits the bill.

Just make sure you make hiring an employee a priority as you work through the tasks on your list for start-up.
