On No.17, after blasting out of the greenside bunker, Furyk had himself a 35-foot par putt. His plan was to leave it withing 3-feet, then escape with a bogey. Great plan–until his par putt dropped in. He followed up that shot with a beautiful 9-iron to within 5-feet on No. 18. A glance at the leaderboard showed that Lee Westwood had birdied No.17 to tie Furyk. No worries for the American–he calmly drained the birdie putt, and went on to victory.

After the victory, Woods said the difference between this week and recent disappointments was his putting.

“It’s just been a matter of making a couple of putts here and there, and I would have won the tournaments,” remarked Woods. “And lo and behold — boom –I hit the ball just as well, just as consistent this week, and I made a few putts. And that’s how it happens.”

The win netted Woods $1.35 million to add to his ever-growing career earnings.

A gaggle of players sit three strokes back of the leaders at 9-under, including John Senden, Justin Leonard, Scott Verplank, Kevin Sutherland and Mike Weir. Senden had the shot of the day, an ultra-rare double eagle on the par-5 second hole. He holed out his second shot, a 250 yard 4-iron, en route to a round of 64.

Tiger Woods’ day had its share of ups and downs. He almost fell below the cut line on the ninth, tenth and eleventh holes, but was able to get a hold of his wonky putter and make all three putts. Woods then made a small charge, grabbing four birdies in his final seven holes to finish with a 67 for the day. Too bad for Tiger his 5-under for the tournament has him seven strokes back heading into the third round.

Jim Furyk (Image: Zuma Press)

The mistake took place in the third round of The Barclays this past weekend, and both Furyk and Cowan tried to put the error behind them. Furyk came back on Sunday with a 2-under 69, but by then the damage was done.

First round leader Anthony Kim couldn’t capitalize on his terrific opening round 62, falling behind Woods by two strokes after shooting a round of even par for the day. Former U.S. Open winner Jim Furyk is lurking in the weeds after scores of 66 and 67 for the first two days. He finds himself at 7-under for the tourney, three strokes back of Tiger. Unfortunately for Kim, Furyk, and Rod Pampling, who sits in second at 9-under, they face a daunting task if they plan on overtaking Woods and claim victory on Sunday. Tiger’s record when leading, or sharing the lead after 36 holes in a tournament is a staggering 31-6, and he has won the last eleven times from said position, dating back to the 2004 Byron Nelson Championship.

Tour officials were initially hesitant to institute a drug-testing policy, believing that the use of PED’s in golf was non-existent. Based on the results of the year’s worth of testing, their assumptions were correct.

The fact that no tour player tested positive for PED’s came as no suprise to PGA pro Jim Furyk. He himself was tested three times throughout the year, and the only problem Furyk noticed some of the players had with the testing was the occasional inability to “produce” a sample on demand.

His impressive win, highlighted by birdies on 3 of the final 4 holes, answered many lingering questions about his surgically repaired knee. It also clearly makes Woods the odds on favorite to capture the U.S. Open next week at Bethpage Black, the site of his 2002 U.S. Open victory. As a final tune up to the upcoming U.S. Open, Tiger made a stop at Bethpage to get in a round with swing coach Hank Haney.

A disappointed Jim Furyk finished one stroke behind Woods at -11, with 3rd round leader Mark Wilson and Jonathan Byrd tied for third at -8.

Others are close behind. Round two’s co-leader, Chad Campbell is only two strokes off the lead at -9 and Jim Furyk carded a 68 today to put him at -8 for the tournament.
