I’ve been speculating for weeks that Charlie Weis wasn’t going to survive the season at Notre Dame. The team has so much talent this year that there was no reason they shouldn’t have been BCS bowl contenders.
Today, sources are saying the the coach has been shown the door after yet another disappointing season. The team had a decent start at 6-2, but they just lost four games in a row to finish 6-6. Whether or not they’ll play in a bowl is up in the air. Notre Dame’s athletic director released a press release today, though, saying that, “We have [...]
Post from: EveryJoe

I’ve been speculating for weeks that Charlie Weis wasn’t going to survive the season at Notre Dame. The team has so much talent this year that there was no reason they shouldn’t have been BCS bowl contenders.

Today, sources are saying the the coach has been shown the door after yet another disappointing season. The team had a decent start at 6-2, but they just lost four games in a row to finish 6-6. Whether or not they’ll play in a bowl is up in the air. Notre Dame’s athletic director released a press release today, though, saying that, “We have great expectations for our football program, and we have not been able to meet those expectations.” He recommended to the school’s president that Weis be fired at the end of the season.

Image: Newscom

The problem here is the buyout. Weis has six years left on his contract, and last I heard, his salary was over $4 million a year, among the highest in college football. I’m not sure what his buyout will be, but it’s going to be a blow for the school.

It’s worth it. This season sucked because the coaching staff sucked, not because they players were young or untalented. I actually feel bad for Jimmy Clausen, because I think he could have been amazing in a different program.

So who’s going to take over for Weis? Assistant head coach Rob Ianello, who also is one of the school’s lead recruiters, will for the time being, but I don’t think he’s in the running to get the job full-time. Urban Meyer’s name has been thrown around because he expressed interest in coaching for Notre Dame in the past, but he insists that he’s staying at Florida. The same goes for Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops. But hey, Rich Rodriguez insisted that he was staying at West Virginia, so I wouldn’t count Meyer and Stoops out of the mix just yet.

Other names that have been mentioned? Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly, Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh, and TCU’s Gary Patterson.

And don’t worry. Weis won’t be out on the street. He says he’s already heard from six NFL teams who want him as offensive coordinator, and while that might be an exaggeration to save face a little, I don’t doubt that he will end up with a job in the NFL again next year.

Following the week three loss to Notre Dame, Michigan fans could take no more. Michigan dropped its third straight home game, and fifth straight overall. The Wolverines went from a pre-season top-five ranking to 0-3; it was the tipping point. Though some fans, bloggers and media-folk had been calling for head coach Lloyd Carr to get the ax at varying degrees for years, the general consensus was now that he must go. It was clear that the populace had turned against him. It was also clear that Coach Carr would not be leaving anytime soon.

And so, a crowd of about 100,000 attempted to storm Schembechler Hall to forcibly remove Lloyd Carr from his position atop Michigan. The crowd was especially raucous for a Michigan group. It has been said that the noise traveled a full block down State Street to Yost Ice Arena. The crowd yelled “Off with his head coaching position!” and burned various jowly effigies. Their attempt to storm Schembechler Hall proved ultimately fruitless. The high walls surrounding the practice field were not scaled. The masses eventually returned to their homes to watch their 1997 highlight tapes and come to terms with the knowledge that — no matter the on-field performance — Michigan was so set in its ways that it was incapable of change.

Coach Carr expressed surprise that he was questioned at all, “Jim Harbaugh must be behind this.”
