On Tuesday, Major League Baseball decided to suspend Beckett for six games for his role in starting the brawl.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander wasn’t too pleased with the decision:

“It makes us feel good that Major League Baseball really supported our position,” said Scioscia, “especially since we were somehow portrayed as the aggressors in that.”

Following the brawl, three members of the Angels were ejected, while no one on the Red Sox was ejected.

Beckett has a 1-1 record after two starts with a 3.46 ERA.

He was battling injuries and didn’t give the Boston Red Sox dominant performances late in the season — as has come to be expected of Beckett.
In seven innings, Beckett allowed only two hits and one earned run, while striking out ten batters. That effort helped lead the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory and get Boston off to a good start for their 2009 season.

At the plate, reigning American League MVP Dustin Pedroia hit a homer in the first inning and later scored again after drawing a walk. Jason Varitek added a home run in the sixth inning.

For the Rays, James Shields struggled in his 5.1 innings, giving up five earned runs, nine hits and three walks. The big bats in the lineup were also quiet. Carlos Pena, Pat Burrell and Matt Joyce, the fourth, fifth and sixth batters in the lineup, combined to go 0-for-12 with six strikeouts.

These two teams, who battled last year in the postseason, face each other on Wednesday with Boston’s Jon Lester pitching against Tampa Bay’s Scott Kazmir.

Imagine you throw a complete game, 4-hit shutout in round 1 of the playoffs against the Angels. Wow! Imagine you snag Game 1 against the Indians in round 2. Wow again! Imagine you’re on the mound again facing The Tribe and elimination if your team comes up short.

Then imagine that your ex-girlfriend shows up—to sing the national anthem, no less.

Welcome to the world of Josh Beckett, former flame of country singer Danielle Peck. The suits in Cleveland swear, cross-their-heart-and-hope-to-die-style, that it was a coinky-dink. We’re not the conspiracy theory type, so we’ll give ‘em a pass in spite of the Tact Patrol violations. Not because we’ve thawed out the heart or anything, but because the RED SOX WON 7-1. As a result of the win, we’re tired (the game lasted until just after Cinderella had to beat feet home), a smidge less pouty, and a dash more cocky about the Sox prospects.

Ex-girlfriends singing the national anthem. Pffft. What’s next, ex-wives throwing out the first pitch?
