Juan Martin del Potro stunned Roger Federer and won the U.S. Open but he was eliminated from the Shanghai ATP Masters. The third-seeded player lost to Jurgen Melzer after a wrist injury led him to quit early.
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic both advanced to the next round. Nadal took on James Blake and walked away with a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 victory on the hardcourts at Qi Zhong Tennis Center. This was a virtual repeat of the pair’s meeting in Beijing last week. Nadal will next face fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo.
Meanwhile, Djokovic easily beat Fabio Fognoni 6-3, 6-1. Other …read more

If you follow tennis closely, you probably know some things about Juan Martin del Potro, the 20-year-old up-and-comer who stunned Roger Federer and won the 2009 U.S. Open last week but just in case you aren’t familiar with his career, here are five fun facts that I saw on People.com.
He’s really tall. In fact, at 6’6” he’s actually the tallest Grand Slam winner ever!
He won four career titles in his first four tournaments which, in itself, is pretty amazing but he’s also the youngest person to ever accomplish that feat!
He’s trilingual since he’s fluent in English and Italian in addition …read more

Juan Martin del Potro has won the 2009 U.S. Open ending the winning streak of reigning champion, Roger Federer. I’m not going to lie – I thought Federer probably had this in the bag but this result just goes to show that we should never assume anything until it’s over!
The young Argentine stunned the Swiss star in five sets in his first-ever Grand Slam final with a score of 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Del Potro took home some amazing prizes – $1.6 million for winning, $250,000 for finishing third in the U.S. Open …read more

It was a week filled with comebacks and upsets leading up to the men’s final at the Rogers Cup in Montreal yesterday. Event organizers used Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as major draws to the tournament but the two plays showed some rust (Federer took a break after Wimbledon since his wife gave birth to twins and Nadal was recovering from a knee injury).
The semi-finals were a bit of a disappointment for me since I really wanted to see Andy Roddick advance but after a very close match against Juan Martin Del Potro, he was eliminated. In the end, Del …read more

Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro emerged the victor at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic after he beat top-seeded American, Andy Roddick, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in the final yesterday. Roddick has won this event three times in the past (2001, 2005 and 2007) but his experience wasn’t enough to hold off Del Potro, last year’s winner. This is the first time this event was won back-to-back by the same person since Andre Agassi did it back in 1998-1999.
The win wasn’t completely easy for second-seeded Del Potro. He had to battle back after blowing three match points in the tie-breaker and …read more
