In the first seven games of the 2009 NFL season, Johnson has 132 carries for 358 yards. He also has 12 catches for 76 yards. His 2.7 yards per carry and his lack of a touchdown have been disappointing developments for the Chiefs — to say the least.

With Johnson watching the game when Kansas City returns to action in Week 9 after the bye week, who will fill in for him? The main candidate is Jamaal Charles. In a backup role, Charles has 23 carries for 116 yards — or an average of five yards per carry. He also has 14 receptions for 120 yards. However, due fumbles and mental mistakes, Charles has yet to become popular with the coaching staff.

Another option to fill in for Johnson is Kolby Smith. Though Smith has been on the PUP list all season, he’ll likely be activated for Week 9. Last season, Smith had 100 yards and one touchdown on 35 carries.

Who Will Fill in for Larry Johnson?

Last season, Pennington and the Dolphins were a great story. After Pennington was released by the New York Jets, he landed with the Dolphins and took them to the playoffs with a record of 11-5. But after another shoulder injury, many team insiders believe that Pennington’s career could be over.

In Week 4, Chad Henne is expected to start at quarterback for Miami. The second round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, Henne will likely be given a few weeks to retain the job. If he doesn’t impress, Thigpen could be given a shot.

With the Chiefs in 2008, Thipgen threw for 2,608 yards and had 21 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and two lost fumbles. In the offseason, the Chiefs acquired quarterback Matt Cassel, which made Thigpen a luxury the team no longer needed.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
With a rookie coach and no quarterback standing out so far, the Bucs appear to be headed to a poor season in their 2009 campaign.

4. Oakland Raiders
For the Raiders to be decent, they need JaMarcus Russell to play better than expected. Don’t count on it.

3. Kansas City Chiefs
It’s difficult to find any bright spot on this team. A lot of solid pieces but the strengths are minimal.

2. St. Louis Rams
The offense will likely struggle and the defense isn’t that good. They have to hope for a big year from their offensive line to compete.

1. Detroit Lions
After going 0-16 last season, the Lions need to show they aren’t historically bad before they rise out of last.

Worst Teams in the NFL – August Edition

Appropriately, Green announced his retirement through his former coach Dick Vermeil. Green’s decision was made on Friday morning.

While with the Kansas City Chiefs under Vermeil, Green had the best seasons of his NFL career. In 2004, he had 4,591 passing yards and 27 passing touchdowns.

For his career, Green had 28,475 passing yards, 162 touchdowns, 114 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 86.

After leaving the Chiefs, Green played with the Miami Dolphins in 2007 and the St. Louis Rams last year.

As told to Fox Sports, Green said: “I feel this is finally the right time. I’ve talked about it with (my family) for a while, especially with the concussions over the last few years. We all felt it was the time to do it.”

#3 2009 Draft Pick – Tyson Jackson, Defensive Tackle, LSU

I like him for the Chiefs. Like I said, they need to boost up their defensive, which sucks. They were last in sacks last year in the NFL, and I think Tyson Jackson could help make a difference. Again, I like the pick. Do you?

2009 NFL Draft: Chiefs Pick Tyson Jackson

After struggling with injuries in 2007, Thomas bounced back to play all 16 games last year with the Cowboys. He recorded 94 tackles to raise his career total to 1,720. He also 20.5 sacks and 17 forced fumbles in his career.

In Kansas City, Thomas joins Mike Vrabel, Derrick Johnson, Monty Beisel, Corey Mays and Demorrio Williams in the linebacker corps. Vrabel was acquired by the Chiefs in a trade with the New England Patriots.

During his career, Thomas has been named to the Pro Bowl seven times. His contract with the Chiefs is believed to be a $2 million deal over one season.

Perhaps one motivation for his change of heart is due to his legal trouble. Larry Johnson pled guilty last week for his involvement in two separate incidents in Kansas City involving nightclubs and women. In one incident he allegedly pushed a woman, while the other incident involved Johnson allegedly pushing a woman.

Considering that NFL Roger Goodell is likely to suspend Johnson and the fact that NFL teams likely won’t be flocking to an admitted woman abuser who has seen his numbers plummet in recent years, this latest idea by Johnson was a good one. His best hope to restore his standing in the NFL is to clean up his personal life and regain his footing as a star running back on the football field.

One thing is certain, Johnson should stay out of the night clubs.

Larry Johnson No Longer Wants to be Traded

One source says he has been charged with two counts of disturbing the peace last week, and another couple counts of assault before that. The last two happened ” against a woman at two Kansas City-area clubs.”

If you or I had some problems whenever we entered a nightclub (and having someone accuse you of assault would constitute a “problem,”) wouldn’t you avoid nightclubs on your own for a while? You know, prove to the world that you can be a good boy by staying out of the very place that got you into trouble to begin with?

Apparently not in this case. So now curfews are part of a probation agreement. Should we write down “use common sense” in the next probation agreement, too?

On the NFL football field, Johnson has been a disappointment the last two seasons after two fantastic years in 2005 and 2006. In those two campaigns, Johnson combined for 37 touchdowns and more than 3500 rushing yards. In the last two seasons, the 6-foot-1, 230 pound running back has only eight touchdowns and less than 1600 yards rushing.

According to the terms of his probation, Johnson will have to perform 40 hours of community service, attend anger management classes and won’t be allowed to visit night spots in the Kansas City area after 9:00 PM.

The NFL hasn’t announced whether Johnson will face further punishment after pleading guilty.
