Perry Overtakes Tiger, Leads by Two

Kenny Perry shot out of the gates to start the third round of the Tour Championship, birdieing the first four holes en route to a 6-under 64, which left him 8-under for the tournament.  Perry finds himself two strokes up on Tiger Woods, who sits at 6-under after his third round 69.  While Perry’s chances of winning the FedEx Cup are a longshot (Perry needs to win the event, with Woods finishing tied for third), he’s by no means out of it.  But first he needs to win the Tour Championship outright.

Kenny Perry Unceremoniously Drops Caddie

Like Neil Sedaka used to say, “Breaking Up is Hard to Do.”  Unless you’re Kenny Perry, who, in a somewhat surprising move, dropped longtime caddie Fred Sanders, without actually telling him.  According to Sanders, the news of his firing came from Perry’s agent, and not from Perry himself.  Even stranger is that Perry had Sanders on his bag throughout The Barclays, never hinting that the tournament would be Sanders last as Perry’s caddie.
Sanders also revealed that Perry’s son Justin, who carried his father’s bag for the Open Championship at Turnberry, will caddie for Perry for the final three FedEx Cup …read more

End of the Line for the Buick Open

It’s been a good news/bad news kind of week for the Buick Open.  Despite ending his endorsement deal with Buick one year early, Tiger Woods has decided to play in this week’s Buick Open at Warwick Hills, an event he has won twice in his career.  Unfortunately for the PGA, General Motors has decided to pull the plug on sponsoring the tournament, which means this year’s Buick Open will most likely be the last.
According to an unidentified person close to the situation, GM and tour officials will make the announcement at the conclusion of the tournament, which ends this coming …read more

Buick Open Field Taking Shape

While many of the players on the PGA tour opted out of this week’s Canadian Open, others are announcing their commitment to play in the upcoming Buick Open. The tournament runs through August 2nd at the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club, just outside of Flint, Michigan. Tiger Woods is the latest tour pro to announce his participation in the event. By playing in the Buick open, it seems as though Woods is determined to play in the two tournaments preceding the PGA Championship. Sandwiched between the Buick Open and the season’s final major is the …read more

Janzen, Stiles Share Lead at John Deere

With the first round of the John Deere Classic in the books, a surprising name can be found atop the leaderboard.  Two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen fired an opening round 7-under 64 to share the lead with Darron Stiles.  The 44-year-old Janzen hasn’t won on tour since since 1998, when he captured his second U.S. Open.  But after doing some major retooling to his swing, Janzen finds himself in the catbird seat, hoping to recapture past glory.
Other notable scores from the day include defending champ Kenny Perry shooting a 3-under 68, current U.S. Open winner Lucas Glover and former …read more

Perry Decides to Play Upcoming British Open

It was the toughest of decisions for Kenny Perry, but even with his mother dying from blood cancer, the 49 year old Kentuckian chose to play in the upcoming British Open at Turnberry.  Perry skipped out on last year’s Open Championship, instead staying with his commitment to play a tournament in Milwaukee.  Initially Perry had all intentions of playing this year’s British Open, but after doctors put his mother in hospice, Perry questioned his decision.
Perry was unsure of how much time his mother, who is suffering from multiple myeloma, had left once she entered into hospice care.  But after meeting …read more

Record Setting Win for Perry at Travelers

After relinquishing the tournament lead to Paul Goydos on Saturday at the Travelers Championship, Kenny Perry sizzled in the final round, shooting a 7-under 63 for the win, and setting a tournament scoring record in the process.  Third round leader Paul Goydos and David Toms finished in a tie for second, three strokes back of Perry, who also gained a share of the course record at the TPC River Highlands this weekend with a brilliant first round of 61.
For Perry there would be no repeat of the Masters collapse from earlier this year, when he bogeyed the final two holes …read more

Goydos Surges Past Perry at River Highlands

The final round of the Travelers Championship is shaping up to be a dogfight after a number of players held the lead during Saturday’s third round.  Eventually Paul Goydos ended up atop the leaderboard, thanks to five birdies on the back nine, leaving him at 16-under for the tournament.  Kenny Perry, the leader after the first two rounds, sits one stroke back at 15-under.

Perry birdied the 12th and 13th to increase his lead to three strokes, but faltered at 14 to give a stroke back.  This opened the door for Goydos, who began his run of four straight birdies on …read more

Perry Hangs on to Lead at Travelers

Kenny Perry shot a 68 today at the Travelers Championship at the TPC River Highlands to follow his scorching 61 in the first round to sit at 11-under for the tournament.  Perry holds a two stroke lead over Ryan Moore, who took advantage of rain-softened greens to post a 65 for the day.  A group of six players, including David Toms and Anthony Kim, sit three strokes back of Perry.

Rain came down on and off throughout the morning, but the sun made an appearance in the afternoon.  The good weather was short-lived however, as thunderstorms rolled in around 4:30 p.m.  …read more

Cabrera Wins Three-Man Playoff at Masters

Tiger may have finished the 2009 Masters Tournament tied for sixth place, but there was plenty of drama on the final round at Augusta. Kenny Perry, who led starting the day, completed regulation play tied with Chad Campbell and Angel Cabrera, forcing a three-man, sudden-death playoff. It was the first ever three-man playoff in Masters history.

It was Cabrera who prevailed, making him (at #69) the lowest-ranked player to ever win at Augusta. He is also the first Argentine to ever win the Masters.
Cabrera, 39, who plays regularly on the European Tour has just two PGA wins, but they are …read more
