Great Britain\’s Rebecca Adlington won Gold in the long distance swimming race, the women\’s 800m freestyle, giving her country its first Gold Medal in that event in more than 80 years. World record times shattered in all four finals at the Water Cube on Wednesday. The most spectacular story is Michael Phelps winning his 10th and 11th Olympic medal, making him the most decorated Olympian in history. WOW! Phelps wasn’t the only story at the Cube, however. Below are scenes from all of the finals:
Federica Pellegrini of Italy took the Gold Medal in the women’s 200m freestyle event, with a world record time of 1:54.82. Pellegrini was the Silver Medalist in this event at the Athens Games.

Of course, the big swimming story of last night/this morning was Michael Phelps win in the men’s 200m freestyle event, earning him his ninth medal and third in Beijing. However, Phelps’ victory wasn’t the only story at the “Water Cube.” Below are a few scenes of the other happenings:
Leisel Jones of Australia won the women’s 100m breaststroke event with a new Olympic record time of 1:05.17. The Silver medal went to Rebecca Soni of the United States and the Bronze was awarded to Mirna Jukic of Austria.

Who is Kirsty Coventry?

It seems that with all of the publicity being heaped on the stars of the Olympics, like Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff, that there are dozens of noteworthy athletes from another the world that are not being talked about. One such swimmer is Kirsty Coventry from the south African nation of Zimbabwe. Few outside the swimming world have heard of this 24-year-old Auburn University alum, although she won three medals at the Athens Games: a Gold, a Silver, and a Bronze.

Stephanie Rice Smashes World Record for 400 IM Gold

Australia’s Stephanie Rice proved Sunday morning (in Beijing) that’s she more than a favorite of the Australian tabloid press. She broke the world record in the women’s 400 IM by more than a second-and-a-half, leaving the previous record holder, American Katie Hoff in her wake. Rice’s Gold Medal time was 4:29.45.
Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe captured the Silver Medal and Katie Hoff earned the Bronze.
