Currently, the unemployment rate sits at 9.7 percent, up a staggering amount from its position only two years ago at 4.7 percent.

The unemployment rate could continue to soar into the double digits by the end of 2009, breaking 10 percent and signaling truly dire straits for the economy. According to the Department of Labor, the number of job seekers that have actually given up looking for jobs is above 750,000, marking the highest number that the Department of Labor has recorded for that statistic since 1994.

4.98 million people are currently unemployed, which is the highest number since World War II, while another 9 million people are underemployed, which means that they are working less hours than they wish to be working. In order to turn the situation around, about 125,000 jobs need to be created each month for two years, while even more jobs will need to be created to get back to normal.

Although today’s financial crisis may not be close to ending, new evidence shows that unemployment may finally be shrinking rather than growing.
According to figures released by the Labor Department, the number of unemployment insurance applications has fallen by 4,000 to 621,000 from last week to this week.
According to figures released by the Labor Department, the number of unemployment insurance applications has fallen by 4,000 to 621,000 from last week to this week. These numbers correlate with Labor Department predictions. Also, the Labor Department has also noticed a rise in worker productivity, a larger increase than expected.

Analysts seem to agree that increased worker efficiency will lead to higher profits and, consequently, fewer job cuts. These reports show that companies are cutting jobs faster than necessary to get the economy back on track and that unemployment numbers should decrease as the effects of the job cuts finally start to show.

The government will publish its take on the situation on Friday when the Labor Department releases its reports. Analysts generally agree on a number that puts job losses around 520,000 in the month of May, increasing the unemployment rate from 8.9 percent in April to 9.2 percent.

If ADP’s reports are accurate, job cuts may be declining in number: ADP recently revised its estimates for April’s job cuts to 545,000.
