Working with Dual-Monitors Is a Must

I don’t really have an office that I work from on a daily basis. I’m normally either working onsite with a client most of the time, or if I’m not onsite I usually prefer to work from my local independent coffee shop or Starbucks if I need an office that’s "open late".
When I’m working onsite with a client though I’m almost always packing in a Dell 17" LCD monitor with me to setup and work with while there. You see, I’ve started working with dual-monitors and now I can’t hardly stand to work without them. Thus always carrying around …read more

Are you in the market for a new computer? What are you looking for with your new machine? Going to buy a powerhouse desktop? A nice laptop with all the features you want? Or maybe a new netbook with super portable features and functionality.
Once you’ve decided what type of machine you’re going to get. How do you decide which one you’re going to buy? What’s more important to you?
I frequently get asked for advice on purchasing computers. Many times because I almost exclusively use a laptop these days, it’s individuals asking me about what laptop to purchase. Very …read more
What’s Going To Happen To The MacBook line?
June 19, 2009 by Juan Magdaraog

Last June 8 Apple revamped it’s line of portable computers. The most significant change being the renaming of the aluminum MacBook to the MacBook Pro. So now there are 3 sizes for the MacBook Pro, the 13, 15 and 17 inch models. Reminiscent to the previous Powerbook line up. While this move is good, it leaves the MacBook line with only the white polycarbonate level. That’s it. One model, not even a variation of it. Just one.
What does this mean? Why did Apple leave it as such? I think Apple has something up it’s sleeve. My guess is that the …read more

The netbooks barage continues and now Dell is leading the way by installing Android apps on the netbook. While they have yet to issue an official announcement, speculation is high that the company has chosen to adopt a different operating system aside from the usual Microsoft XP or Linux systems.
BSquare is the company the leaked out this information boasting that they have ported Adobe’s Flash Lite 3.17 technology to Dell’s Android netbooks.
The press release previously found here, has been removed. Those who had a chance to read the release notes, has posted the information here — Dell Android Netbook Outed …read more
Those Damn Windows 7 Editions
Microsoft has done it again. After six Windows Vista editions, now it has decided to continue with six Windows 7 editions. The editions are going to be called Home Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate.
The list differs at one item from Windows Vista: Business became Professional. Is it because Windows Vista didn’t do good business, Business edition or otherwise, and because Windows XP Professional did?
I am disappointed.
The Home Starter edition is supposedly designed especially for netbooks. One of the edition’s stark defining startling features is that not more than 3 applications can be run simultaneously. Duh! Already …read more
$10 Computers in India
The last week has been filled with frenzy here in India with rumors about a $10 laptop. Not $100. It is $10. The prototype designed and developed by IISC Bangalore and IIT Madras (my alma mater) was unveiled today. Immediately, it has been hit by very negative reviews with reporters disappointed that it isn’t really even a netbook with scaled-down features. Of course, you can’t yet get a computer that costs 40 times less and has similar functionality.
Called “Sakshat”, the concept is similar to OLPC. While screenshots aren’t out yet, Sakshat has a small screen, 2GB disk space, wi-fi connectivity, …read more
A Massive Tech Channel Roundup
I’ve realized that my last Tech Channel Roundup was nearly a month ago and I’m guilty of it. So, bear with me as I overload you with a number of interesting links that I found in some of the sister blogs.
Milo discovered a product especially useful for enterprises of all sizes called Nightwatchman, a good news that Microsoft didn’t lay off anybody in the Vista team. I knew that they didn’t touch the Silverlight team, but frankly I’m surprised about this because Vista hasn’t been very profitable to Microsoft. Or has it? One bad news is the Windows 7 minimum …read more
Do Not Walk the Laptop
After the touchpad mouse failure (overuse and abuse) and the keyboard failure (accidental food spillovers), one of the most common failures in a laptop is the hard disk failure.
A quick survey using Google tells us that there are nearly a million results for laptop hard disk, about a half million each for laptop hard disk recovery and laptop hard disk replacement, and a quarter million for laptop hard disk failure.
Let us look into mechanical hard disk failures as there are recovery tools which can very well work in case of other kinds of failures.
One obvious reason why a hard disk …read more
Use Dual Monitors
Dual monitors are all the rage these days. People whose work is closely tied to the stock market use dual monitors: the Bloomberg/Reuters terminal and the work monitor. In other workplaces, especially where there aren’t too many restrictions on the Internet usage, it is not uncommon for developers to use one monitor as the workspace and another for browsing, checking mail, and work-related googling. Recently, dual monitors have entered our houses.
While I went through the customizations of the Dell Inspiron Mini 9, I was amused to find “External Monitor” listed among “Accessories”. This may be a singular case specific to …read more
