I just started with my new work last Monday and admittedly it was a big huge culture shock for me. The company where I’m at now is uber conservative and formal as compared to the wild and crazy atmosphere where I came from.
But what struck me most is the almost personal way that the big bosses relate to all their employees, even with the rank and file. Like how timely that one of the bosses sent an email to everybody about the present global financial crisis and how we can deal about it as an individual.

I’m not going to post everything here since I really don’t have the guts to email him and ask if I can repost his email for all the world wide web to see. So here’s a gist of what he sent. The response to the crisis may be addressed to in three levels:

At individual levels, we can talk to our family members about the current financial situation and how each can contribute to the crisis at hand. And don’t forget to ask your kid’s opinion, you’ll be surprised at how much stuff school or even friends have taught them about saving and belt tightening.

At corporate level, as employees, we can also help by saving up on electricity, putting non-critical expenditure to hold. To avoid frills and to maximize our patronage of our own merchants will go a long way.

At national level, as citizens of this country, of what we can do to help out. It’s tiring (at least for me) to keep on pointing fingers at others as to why we’re experiencing these crisis. Its high time to think of what we can do to help and focus our efforts on it. Just like the 2nd level, patronizing Philippine made products will definitely keep more Filipinos in their jobs. I know, sometimes, imported goods are cheaper but a peso or two difference will go a long way. Just like what the boss shared in his email, instead of patronizing mineral water from Malaysia, served in an uppity resto, ask for a local product. Conserving energy, just like my BAD post last year, and avoiding wasteful consumption will go a long way to help our country.

Aside from all of this, we should remain calm at all times. Panicking WILL NOT help. And save up as much as three months worth of family expenses.

Its been a while since we ate at our favorite fast food chain and went malling, its one of the steps we thought of to belt tightening. We also spend a lot of time outdoors, when its not raining, so that the little girl gets to play with other kids in the complex and we get to save on electricity, too.

And instead of bringing the car (employee parking is free, wee) with just me in it, I take public transpo. I also try to walk instead of riding the jeep to save up and at the same time, the 5 minute walk will be beneficial for my health too.

So what has all of this got to do with poverty?

If everybody becomes more pro-active in fighting poverty, instead of pointing fingers and putting the blame on the government or to anyone else, I’m sure our lives will definitely become better.

Thank you, Mr. Boss, sir. Your email has become an eye-opener for me.

But ask any casual gamer where’s a nice place to meet up and play with just about anybody of your choice. Where else but on social networking sites.

At least the author of this article thought so too.

Sites like MySpace and Scrabulous saw the huge potential of supporting and installing games on their sites. Imagine having hundreds of games to play for free, with your friends or even with total strangers. The number of visits and returns for these players would translate to more income.

Playfish co-founder and CEO, Kristian Segerstrale, even called social networks “the greatest game platform that has ever been built.”

Zynga, the developer of “Texas Hold’Em,” which appears on Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and Hi5, can attest to that. Mark Pincus, founder and CEO, claims that the title pulls in 900,000 players every day.

Sheesh, that’s a lot of eyeball exposure if you ask me.

Here are some of my favorites:

And my ultimate favorite:

Maybe if there’s a shirt saying Gamer Mommy or Gamer Mom, that will be super for me too.

So there I was, watching the 8th episode of Gossip Girl when a couple of the female characters challenged the other for a round of Guitar Hero. I was thrilled until I actually watched them play. Acting is one thing, but acting out gaming is another. Watch the video after the jump to see what I mean.

It seems like they need some more practice, and actual playing experience, to convince viewers that they really do play. At least the characters at the Big Bang Theory are either gamers themselves or they are good in acting out playing Halo.

PopCap recently published a press release showing that banning internet personal use can actually cost around $7.5 billion in business money. Gasp! It also states that casual gaming in the workplace has a positive effect on the work environment.
How do you say?

Well for starters, browsing the internet is one way of breaking work monotony and cutting off that priviledge causes employees to feel resentful about their workplaces. Plus, ten minutes of playing games helps relieves stress and can actually help the mind focus at the task at hand. Sounds [...]
Post from: EveryJoe

According to Laurent Fischer, managing director of marketing and PR at Nintendo of Europe, the concept of casual gaming is just plain absurd. He told CasualGaming.biz that its either you’re a gamer or not. Well, that’s true. But as to what TYPE of gamer, that’s where casual gaming comes in.

For years, gaming has been divided into two types of gamers, casual and core. The only difference is that core gaming is something you play for days at a time. While casual gamers can just pickup the game, play it for minutes or hours at a time, leave it and just go back whenever you want to.

What Mr. Fischer didn’t like about the term “casual” is that it denotes games that are easy, ergo, not challenging.

Its like telling that listeners of pop music is not as serious as those who listen to jazz or classical. Pop music may be more mainstream and easier to listen to and having an inclination to it doesn’t mean you’re of the lesser breed.

Same goes with gaming.

Anyone can be a harcore casual gamer, just like Mr. Mike’s girlfriend, or be a casual core gamer.

Nintendo may be hailed king of games, but their execs should get their views straight. Or was this a kind of propaganda for a paradigm shift?
