I mentioned about a month ago, that Lindsay Davenport may miss the 2009 Australian Open because of a knee injury. Boy was I wrong! Yes, she is going to miss it, but because she is expecting her second child. Congratulations Lindsay!
Lindsay and her husband Jonathan Leach have announced that they are expecting their second child sometime next year. Lindsay and Jonathan have an 18 month old named Jagger Jonathan (pictured above).
Lindsay is said to be “thrilled” even though she said, “this unexpected but exciting surprise now means I will be putting tennis on hold for the foreseeable future.”

Lindsay Davenport, who is still troubled by a knee injury, may not be making the trip to Melbourne in January 2009 for the Australian Open. In fact, it’s being said that she may not play again professionally at all.
Davenport’s knee injury caused her to withdraw from several 2008 tournaments. In 2007, after the birth of her first child, she made a comeback and won four Sony Ericsson WTA Tour titles.

This probably doesn’t come as a big surprise to anyone, but Lindsay Davenport withdrew from Wimbledon earlier today with a knee injury.
The 32-year-old American withdrew from the warm-up Eastbourne tournament earlier this month. She also sat out the clay court season. Who would have thought two months without competitive tennis would cause issues later? Hmmm.
Here are my thoughts: Davenport is done. She did a remarkable job earlier this year. She played well, she played hard, she beat some good players.

But LD just doesn’t have the stamina, the ability to stay healthy or the game anymore to last two long weeks at a Grand Slam. I know she’s a former Wimbledon champion. From 1999. That’s almost a decade ago!

I’m not knocking Davenport’s try to make a comeback. It’s admirable. But you also have to know when to acknowledge that the run is over. She’s older (in tennis terms anyway – otherwise she’s not), and she’s got a child. Funny how those miniature human beings reorder your priorities in a hurry.

I have a feeling a few more forced withdraws from tournaments will cause Davenport to take a step back and reconsider her tennis career. Maybe I’m wrong; I hope I’m not.

Three set and three and a half hours later, Sharapova had survived a clay court test. It was just the thing she had been looking for – and probably needing – but it almost had a different outcome than she wanted.

Sharapova won the first set 7-6(3), lost the second 5-7 and then won the third 7-6(1). A lot of close sets for something that could have had the same outcome in less time…obviously. A win can always come quicker, better and easier.

Sharapova is the top-ranked player left in the tournament. Amelie Mauresmo is through to the quarterfinals after a hairy 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(6) three-setter. I’d forgotten Mauresmo was still playing on the courts; she’s been utterly non-existant for the past couple years.

And Lindsay Davenport is through to the quarterfinals in a three-set match as well, albeit a little easier one (6-4, 3-6, 6-4). Evidently taking the game the distance was the order of business at Amelia Island.

I suppose the biggest news today is that Lindsay Davenport rolled Ana Ivanovic in straight sets in Miami today.
I don’t sound incredibly enthusiastic about that, do I? Let me try again.
Storming back from mommy-hood, Lindsay Davenport put on a stunning display of tennis in her straight-set win over world number two Ana Ivanovic…amazing!
Hmm – yeah – not really my style.
Also moving on in the women’s draw was top-ranked Justine Henin, Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova. And it’s also hot in Miami. I’m a little jealous considering it’s still snowing in the Pacific Northwest.

There has been some ups and downs to start this first quarter of the 2008 season. Probably the one that sticks out the most is Roger Federer’s decline. Well – maybe not decline – how about the narrowing of the gap between him and the minions chasing him? But for today, I’d like to put a positive spin on this post and talk about the players who have really stepped it up in the first two-ish months of the season: the top of the crop. (They’re not in any particular order because, as we all know, I’m very sensitive to the feelings of others and don’t want anyone to get their teeny-weeny feelings hurt.)

- I gotta start with my boy blue: Andy Roddick. The guy finally did something I could be proud of since winning the U.S. Open in…yeah, it’s been so long I don’t remember…2003. Roddick won the Dubai Open and did so by working his way through Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

- Speaking of Djokovic, he deserves a place here too. He won the Australian Open. He beat the King when the King still held that title with such ease. Maybe he bobbled against Roddick but darn it, if he just wasn’t the little Serbian who could.

- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga brought some emotion back into tennis and for that, he gets a nomi here for top of the crop. Tsonga worked Nadal, I mean worked him, in the Aussie Open. Tsonga also beat Andy Murray in the first round and a host of other folks en route to losing in the final. But Tsonga had an energy and a level of enthusiasm that seems to be missing from a lot of the others. I like that. It earned him his vote.

- To get away from the rather manly selection I’ve got going so far, how about…hmm…horse nuts, I’m going to have to pick Maria Sharapova, aren’t I? I’m no hypocrite. There isn’t a thing I like about her but she earns her spot here because of what she did Down Under. She mopped the floor with Justine Henin. That’s not easy to do even though the world No. 1 is only, what, 5-feet 6-inches and Sharapova is the blond equivelant of the Jolly Green Giant.

- As if being in her 30s wasn’t enough, Lindsay Davenport made her comeback toting a drooling baby and a diaper bag. That’s some determination, folks. And she’s being successful. She won a tourney in Miami. She did well in the Fed Cup. I’m not the type to go ga-ga over some cooing baby, but I’m giving props to Davenport for simultaneously making it work on the WTA tour and being Wonder Mommy.

- Hmm. I’m feeling like things need to be balanced for this quarter’s edition of top of the crop. Therefore we need another tennis skirt on here. Thinking. Still thinking. The brain is starting to hurt because it has to work hard. Well – if it isn’t that country of Serbia again! Ana Ivanovic. Or should I pick Jelena Jankovic? They’re both playing well. Ivanovic got to the finals in the land of the Aussies. Jankovic never goes away. I think they tie here because neither has done enough to sway me into believing they earn a whole section on the top of the crop.

Notice I didn’t give a spot to either of the world No. 1s. It’s not that they don’t deserve it…it’s just that they don’t deserve it. Next quarter we’ll do another top of the crop to see who has their tennis balls lined up and who needs to whip ‘em into shape.

Davenport blistered through a short hour match-up with Olga Govortsova to win her 55th singles crown of her career. Shortly after that victory, Davenport took the court with teammate Lisa Raymond and claimed the doubles title as well.

“I had no idea what to expect coming back,” said Davenport. “I was hopeful, not too sure given my age and the age of most of the players, but it’s been great. I’ve been smart about my schedule and what tournaments I’ve been playing.”

Is she going to be around awhile? Let’s hope so.
