Here are the Final results of the Round Robin

CANADA WINS! On Shannon Kleibrink’s Last Rock!
* Go Canada Go! Team Canada will now play Switzerland in the Semi-Final on Wednesday. There are no tie-breaker games tomorrow.

If Team Canada Loses and there is a tie-breaker
* If Russia loses, then it’s easy – GBR vs CAN ..
* If Russia Wins, then Canada gets a ‘bye’ and Russia and Great Britain would play first, and Canada would play the winner because Team Canada women beat each team individually (session 3 and 7)

Canada and Denmark!
* 9th end … TIED!! I’m sure the women’s Great Britain team are biting their nails about now. Russian Federation also has to win this game to remain in the series …. Nail biting ~

Japan is now out of medal competition
* If Team Canada were to lose, Japan would not be tied as they have lost their game to Switzerland

Amy Nixon is not playing due to stomach illness or food poisoning
* Team Canada’s 3rd Amy Nixon is watching the game and Alternate Sandra Jenkins is taking over Glenys Bakker’s second position, and Glenys Bakker is taking over Amy’s position
* Get Well Soon Amy!
* I sure hope that skip Shannon Kleibrink doesn’t get this illness in the next few days …

If Team Canada Loses and Rhona Martin
*in 2002, Rhona Martin and the GBR team was in a similar situation, in the tie-breaker round, and ended up going all the way to win the Gold in women’s curling. Of course, if Team Canada wins .. GBR is out.

This is how the standings are going
* If Canada beats Denmark, there will be no tie breaker
* If Canada loses against Denmark, there will be a tie-breaker with Great Britain. If Japan beats Switzerland, there will be a 3-way tie. If Russian Federation beats Norway, then there should be a 4-way tie

I’m back
* Sorry guys .. had client meeting, and I just arrived back to watch the games mid-end #6 .. how’s it going, eh?

Canada is in the Playoffs!
* Which means, Jamie Korab will have an extra day off tomorrow …and then Team Canada and Team United States will compete AGAIN in the Semi-Finals on Wednesday! And, by the way .. even though both CAN & USA are 6 wins and 3 losses, because of today’s result Canada is in 2nd place. It should be noted that Mike Adams had the highest efficiency rate between all curlers today – at 84% .. Good Job Mike!

Whew!
* Canada leading by two points coming into the 10th end, but USA with last rock…

Brad Gushue taking chances
* End 8 … two big shots! You are redeemed Brad Gushue! :D
* 0 for 2 on End 7 … Brad’s efficiency is the lowest in today’s game – at 58% consisting of 25% on draw shots, and 72% on take-outs … His second shot looked like it just missed the broom. If Team USA wins, Norway will play Switzerland in the first tie-breaker game, and the winner would play Canada for the 4th spot in the semi-finals. Mind you – the game is far from over, in fact .. might be the most interesting part of the game in the next final few ends! Are you watching?

The other two games are both over right now
* The other games are both final now, after 6 ends in each game! Team Canada vs Team USA is the final game of the Men’s Curling Round Robin tournament…. Go Canada Go!

Russ Howard’s Career
* Russ Howard, who turned 50 years yesterday, has been curling for more than 30 years. You can see his career hilights on his own homepage here

Team Canada Jamie Korab not playing
* Mike Adam after 4 ends, is at efficiency 93% and is the highest of both teams, and seems to be doing heck of a job filling in for sweeping
* Mike Adam (alternate) is replacing Jamie Korab (lead) because apparently Jamie has a stomach flu or virus or food poisoning or whatever has been going around ..

CBC is picking up the USA/CAN game in end 3 now
* Whew

This game is still not being televised live
* I just don’t get it. I really don’t.

Statistics
* See the tidbit section of the Women’s Curling Session 11 for some comments

~~~ Tidbits while I am live blogging ~~~~~
Currently in Alpine Skiing ..
* In the Men’s giant slalom .. Canadian Francois Bourque is currently ranked first .. Of course, this is just Round 1 and Round 2 continues this afternoon (Torino time) .. Go Canada Go! There are 3 other Canadians racings .. see the Live Results HERE
Speaking of Team Canada Men vs Team United States Men
* Although the teams have not yet played each other here at the Olympics, Brad Gushue team has played Pete Fenson’s team here in Winnipeg at the BDO Classic Canadian Open here in January 2006. Gushue won 6-5. :D .. I remember reading that they played another time too in recent times, but Fenson won .. so – today’s game will be the unofficial Tie-Breaker rivalry game itself! Go Team Canada Go!
Where Team Great Britain Women’s curling team stands
* If you didn’t know, GBR’s skip Rhona Martin is the current reigning Olympic champion in women’s curling. To be eligible for the playoffs, she needs TWO things to happen. Firstly, she must win her final game in Session 12 against United States Women. Secondly, Canada must lose against Denmark, or Norway must lose both of their games, this morning (against Denmark see above) and this evening against Russian Federation. Then – there will be a tie-breaker.
Where Team Canada Women’s Curling Stands
* Well, let’s just say that a final standing of 6 wins and 3 losses for Team Canada women will be better than 5 wins and 4 losses, and see what happens during this session 11.
Where Team Canada Men’s Curling Stands
* This is how they stand for the men’s afternoon session 12, and the games are as follows:
Switzerland vs Italy
New Zealand vs Germany
Canada vs United States
* As you can see – the only game that really counts is Canada vs United States. If Canada wins, then all the teams above the grey line qualify and there will be no tie-breakers. If Canada men loses, there will be a 2-way tie with Norway, and depending if Switzerland beats Italy, there could be a 3-way tie.
Series coming to an end
* Team Canada men play their final game this afternoon against United States
* Team Canada women play their final game tonight against Denmark, in the evening session.
* The preliminary series (regular season?) will be over today. For the women’s curling, this morning session 11 and the evening session 12 will be the last games before the playoffs. For the men’s curling, their final session 12 will be during the afternoon session. When all the 12 sessions are complete, each team will have played a total of 9 games. For both men and women – only the top four teams advance to the ‘playoffs’. If needed, the tie-breaker games will occur Tuesday February 21, 2006.
I am not watching any of these gameS
* I mean .. how could I? Non of them are being televised … Perhaps in the evening session 12 they will televise Team Canada women vs Denmark .. but I am watching the live stats!
~~~ Tidbits while I’m Semi-Live-Blogging / Latest on top ~~~

Canada vs Norway
* End 9 – Brad Gushue was just about to shoot when he had to pause because of the interuption – of the crowd cheering from a Pete Fenson shot .. what did he do? Hmmm
* End 8 – Back and forth ..
* End 5 – Missed it .. by … Thaaaaaaaaat much … Nice try Brad!
* End 4 – Ouch! Counting 1, 2 in the house, a raise that could steal 2, maybe 3 .. turned into a missed shot and a steal by Norway. But you can’t be afraid to take the high risk shots … It’s a miss. Move on Commentators!
* End 3 – nice take-outs, combinations and raises … to quote Don Wittman .. “Smoooooth” .. and a last shot draw by Paal Trulsen to steal 1 .. That’s the way to do it!

What does Semi-Live-Blogging Mean?
* It just means updates ever few ends instead of at the end of each end …

Rankings prior to this game
* Canada, Great Britain and Sweden are at 3 wins, 1 loss
* Finland, Italy, Norway and United States are at 2 wins, 2 losses
* Germany and Switzerland are at 1 win, 2 losses
* New Zealand has 0 wins, 4 losses

~~~ Tidbits of stuff while I am Live Blogging (latest on top) ~~~
10th end – CAN vs SUI
* Shannon missed her first rock but the second looked good, hiding behind a guard. All that needed to happen was the Swiss skip to miss her final shot – but – alas – she drew to the 4 foot to win. *sniff*
Dancing in their “Spandies”
* Team USA Skip Cassie Johnson attributes her recent win to group dancing in their spandies listening to music on REAL speakers, instead of individually dancing to the tune of your own iPod… :-) That’s cute. Awwwww ..
Questioning Shannon Kleibrink’s Stragegy
* Don Whittman was pretty sure that kleibrink would kill her final stone in the 9th and let Switzerland steal 1 to lead by 2, just so she can take the hammer home in the 10th (having last rock). She drew to the button and tied it up – now Mirjam Ott has final stone ..
Average Age of Olympians? Oldest? Youngest?
* According to THIS, the average age of the Male Olympian at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 was 26 years, 8 months. The average age of the women at the 2002 Olympics was 25.
* Two of the oldest Males in 2006 Turin are in the Curling competition .. Russ Howard from Canada (turning 50) and the new record goes to the oldest olympican .. Scott Baird from United States at “54 years and 282 days” old, at opening games.
* The oldest woman at the 2006 Turin games, “Grandma Luge” (Anne Abernathy from Virgin Islands) broker her wrist on Sunday .. is 52
* The youngest? 14-year-old female Sun Zhifeng of China (of the halfpipe) and male 15-year-old Manuel Pietropoli of Italy (also of the halfpipe) .. Manuel is officially the youngest male now. the youngest female is still from 1932 at age 11 – British figure skater Cecilia Colledge. Hmmm.. that’s young!
Yesterday’s Measurement
* Was yesterday’s measurement during Team Canada men’s game the only time so far in 2006 Olympics? (i don’t know the answer to this) .. at the time – Russ Howard thought it was a SUI point, but it ended up being a CAN point .. it goes to show how close it can be to get to the center button ..
Sure am proud of Team Kleibrink!
* Shannon just made a great final shot draw to steal 2 to tie it back up in the 5th.. You have to make the crunch shots, and be able to draw when you need to! wtg
Types of Curling Shots
* In case you didn’t know, there are basically nine types of curling shots: (1) the draw, (2) the freeze, (3) the hit and stay, (4) the come around, (5) the guard, (6) the raise and (7) hit and roll. That’s the 7 shots that you can see animated. I would add to their list (8) the “throw as hard as you can for a takeout” shot and (9) “miss the bloody shot by going straight through the house or not even reaching the hog line”
Cheering Local Crowd
* It was much quieter in the house when Sweden ended up with points in End 3 .. but that is natural .. Italy should be proud of their teams (Men 2/2, Women 1/2) .. The few games that I’ve watched – were all close!
* Number of times Italy has entered a curling team in the Olympics: 0 (the host country of the 2006 Games will ice its first-ever team in Turin)
Today’s Events
* There are 8 medals to be issued today at the games .. Go Canada Go!
Go Italy Go!
* Wow .. the cheers from the Italy game are quite loud and proud … but will the distraction affect the current curlers? Probably not. Curlers are kind of used to loud rinks, bad acoustics, etc etc.
Team Canada using different brooms?
* Team Kleibrink are using Yellow brooms this morning // update: Shannon Kleibrink (skip) and Amy Nixon (3rd) have been using yellow brooms. I never noticed it before – Glenys Bakker (2nd) and Christine Keshen (lead) are using http://www.torino2006.org/ENG/OlympicGames/photogallery/gallery_104_12.html brooms.
~~~ Tidbits of stuff while I am Live Blogging (latest on top) ~~~

I hope you’ve enjoyed my little Tidbits ..
* that’s it for this section as we watch the final FIN/NZL on TSN now..

Off-Topic: Ladies Ice Hockey
* I wrote earlier about the “Winnipeg” representation and Jennifer Botterhill. Well, there was a story on our local stations and they showed an interview with her and her folks. Did you know that besides her own history and accomplishments … that Her mother Doreen represented Canada in speed skating at the 1964 and 1968 Winter Olympics. Her brother Jason won three gold medals, more than any other player, representing Canada at the world junior hockey championships. Her father Cal is a renowned sports psychologist at the University of Winnipeg. Jennifer Botterill was named Manitoba’s female athlete of the year for 2001, an award her mother won 40 years ago.

Hmmmm after 7
* Norway seems to be giving Sweden a run for the money! Anybody watching?

Speaking of Days Off ..
* Team Canada women’s “Team Kleibrink” is also off today after their duo games yesterday. Coach Daryl Nixon is posting a diary on their ‘official’ website, and provides us with some neat commentaries about daily life over in Pinerolo (interesting reading and photos!) For instance .. Did you know that stores close between 1pm and 4pm over there? The team was planning on going to Canada Olympic House and to do some shopping in Torino then back at 17:00 local time for a practice I believe ..

About Olympic Medals and Ranking
* If you notice on the Torino2006.org Medal site .. The “Final Rank” in the left side column (I believe) is the official way to reporting a winner of the games – that being the NOC with the most GOLD medals. The “Rank By Total” in the left side (=3 means means tied in 3rd place) is the way that both Canada and USA declares the winner of the games – that being the NOC with the MOST medals. To compare, besides official olympic committees .. here’s an example.

United States Men’s Curling Team has the day off today
* So ..skip Pete Fenson is probably sampling out the local Pizzeria’s around the neighborhood for Dave’s Pizza (that’s his two-Pizza parlor chain business in Bemidji, Minnesota!)

F.Y.I. – Ladies Alpine Skiing – News …
* I just noticed in my Bloglines .. Injured USA skiier Lindsey Kildow was released from hospital yesterday and appears on the Ladies Alpine Skiier list at #31 .. here’s the entire LIST for today’s event! That’s good to hear she’s okay!

‘Magic Broom’ controversy
* If you recall, there was some controversy with the secret computerized brooms Great Britain has been using in training to measure sweeping pressure, and other factors … but Women’s skip Rhona Martin says .. “the controversy over the high-tech brush had been “carried way out of all proportion”. “Basically, it was a stopwatch on a brush and all countries use a stopwatch…we use a sweeping ergometer as a training tool,” she said. “I’ve used it twice in my life and we just use it for practice. It’s linked to a computer and it can tell you how hard you sweep and how fast.” “When we go on the ice we’ve got the same brush, the same stopwatch as every other team, as every other country, so it’s not a magic broom, unfortunately,” she said a little wistfully.

By The Way …
* Speaking of Great Britain statistics, the GBR women’s team is also at 2 wins and 0 losses, and is the only women’s curling team currently undefeated! Go Rhona Go!

oooooops
* (yes- GBR s/b = 2 wins and 0 losses .. I had 1 //ooops! Fixed at End 2)

Tournament Accuracy
* Team Canada skip Brad Gushue .. 76%
* Team Great Britain skip David Murdoch .. 63%
(according to TSN.ca)

Current Standings prior to today’s games
* Canada – 1 win, 1 loss //
* Great Britain – 2 wins, 0 loss

* Sweden – 3 wins, 0 losses
* Norway – 1 win, 1 loss

* Finland – 1 win, 1 loss
* New Zealand – 0 wins, 3 losses

~~~~ Tidbits While I am Live Blogging, latest on top ~~~~
Canada Loses in the extra end
* It was exciting .. although something looked fishy on the movement of some rocks .. something on the ice? melting and camera lights issues? On Brad Gushue’s last two rocks (I.M.H.O.) .. just where the rock ’seemed’ to have occurred .. the rocks were pretty much over the Olympic Torino 2006 graphics … I know from looking at the picture galleries there are a lot of pictures showcasing this same area. Coincidence? I’ll have to see the replay – they just switched over back to skiing and skating on the tube
Full House?
* 9th end .. 13 rocks in play, 9 of them in the house, Canada lies one .. then Brad Gushue first rock .. now Canada lies 3 ..
Back and forth!
* .. especially Germany and Italy’s scores .. sure LOOKs exciting! Same with all of these matches .. my ‘tidbits’ usually decline closer to the end of these games FYI
Another good read
* While I’m at it .. this one’s a good blog to read too .. I like Amateur’s style .. and btw – his probability distribution for Canada’s 2006 Olympic medal total has now been revised to 19.7 ~ (it started at 21.1 you know)
Do you read the Curling News blog?
* I enjoy reading their RSS feed in my Bloglines.. and like to follow the links .. e.g. a “heads up” about ‘This Guy‘ .. Even though PetLvr.com isn’t listed on his favorite doggy sites (boohoo~) .. even I – from Manitoba – did not know that Morris High School, Manitoba offers a Curling course. But what a great idea! Curling is about strategy .. nothing wrong honing on one’s skills!
Nice Shot!
* Sweden’s skip Peja Lindholm just made a great draw to the button in the 4th to steal 1 .. Canada was lying 3 stones .. That’s Curling for you!
Oh! That explains it!
* Apparently, Great Britain’s women’s curling team can thank yesterday morning’s win over Denmark (3-2) to piper Arturo Gasparini, a Milan financial analyst .. by turning out a home-bred bagpipe band to accompany Scotland’s Olympic curling champion Rhona Martin.
Happy Valentine’s Day
* My wife’s work’s social club has “secret” santa week, “secret” halloween week, and other similar weeks throughout the year, like “secret” valentine’s day week. Each employee draws out a random employee name out of a hat, then for the entire week they have to leave “secret” gifts for their fellow workers without them seeing. They are limited, of course to the the dollar store type of purchases $1-$2 maximum. I think that is a great idea to spread this out over a week (and cheaper than one big hit out of my wallet!).. For myself, I’ve been leaving little gifts around the usual places, like the freezer, fridge, bathroom .. (I’ve just been been printing homemade cards off of the http://www.printfree.com/ site, with silly sayings on the inside of a quarter-fold card) ..
PS: “Trust your HART” .. if you haven’t bought your spouse anything yet .. you still have time! (even if you both agreed NOT to get anything – do it;)
Standings Before This Session
* Norway 0 win 1 loss; Switzerland 1 win 0 loss
* Canada 1 win 0 loss; Sweden 2 wins 0 losses
* Germany 0 win 1 loss; Italy 0 win 2 losses
* United States 1 win 1 loss; New Zealand 0 win 2 losses
