As if you didn’t already know, tonight will be Manny Tapia Vs. Miguell Torres for the Bantamweight Championship on Versus at 8pm Est. In case you don’t get Versus, I’ll be covering the fight outcomes as the end, so stay tuned later this evening.

The last two taped episodes of The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 will play this Wednesday evening with a two hour run. The semi-final fights are as follows:

Light Heavyweights

It’s hard to believe this season is almost over. Seems like it went by pretty quick.

Also on Wednesday night is WEC 37, where we will see Miguel Torres defend his Bantamweight championship title against Manny Tapia. This even will also be the last Light Heavyweight fight (Mark Munoz Vs. Ricardo Barros) in the WEC before the weight class is dissolved in 2009. This fight will probably not be televised though. Other fights on that card are:

End Of Week MMA Update

This past week I missed the fact that due to the Thanksgiving holiday, The Ultimate Fighter was not going to air. Instead, we saw replays of the last two episodes. You’ll have to wait until next week to see back to back episodes. December 3rd is also WEC 37 with Manny Tapia vs. Miguel Torres.

WEC 37 starts at 8 pm with 4 fights to air so it should be over by the time The Ultimate Fighter comes on at 10 pm on Spike TV. This Torres Vs. Tapia fight should be a great fight. Also Brian Bowles will be fighting Will Ribeiro and Bwoles fights are always pretty good bouts.

ProElite has had their Promotional licenses reinstated by the California Stat Athletic Commission, so Jake Shields is not a free agent just yet. Like all the other EliteXC fighters, he’ll have to wait it out to see what happens in the near future.

If George St.Pierre beats B.J. Penn, he could be facing Anderson Silva next by moving up in a weight class. Of course this is just a rumored thing right now, but Dana White spoke about it at MMAWeekly.com. That would be a fight to see.

WEC Announces Upcoming Bantam Weight Championship and Does Away With Light-Heavyweight And Middleweight Classes

Miguel Angel Torres is a great bantam weight fighter. If you follow the WEC then you would know the name and face. Pound for pound one of the best fighters in the WEC with Jui Jitsu that’s difficult to rival. On December 3rd Miguel will have to defend his championship and prove that he is the best Bantamweight fighter in the WEC when he takes on unbeaten Manny Tapia.

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – With two spectacular wins that sky-rocketed him into the pound-for-pound stratosphere, WEC® bantamweight champion Miguel Angel Torres has been one of 2008’s great success stories. But the only man standing between him and likely recognition as Fighter of the Year is one of his greatest rivals, Manny Tapia, an unbeaten contender who has been waiting six months for his shot at the 135-pound weight class’ greatest prize. The World Extreme Cagefighting® organization is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, December 3rd, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, these two warriors will finally meet in an explosive contest guaranteed to produce fireworks.

This next bit is kind of strange if you ask me. The WEC plans to roll with only 4 weight classes beginning in 2009. This is going to force some fighters, such as hopefuls or current residents, to drop weight if they want to continue or fight in the WEC.

The WEC also announced that, starting in 2009, the organization will focus on four weight classes: welterweight (170 pounds), lightweight (155 pounds), featherweight (145 pounds), and bantamweight (135 pounds). The WEC will no longer actively promote light heavyweight and middleweight fights after the Dec. 3rd event. This increased attention to the sport’s lighter divisions makes the WEC the undisputed home of the most exciting lighter weight fighters in mixed martial arts.

Great Middleweights like Chael Sonnen, Joe Doerksen and Paulo Filho will have to drop weight in order to stay if allowed and Light Heavyweights that dominate like Brian Stann and Doug Marshal will be looking for other employment opportunities elsewhere. I don’t see the sense in doing away with the Light Heavyweights. Honestly the WEC doesn’t have but a handful, so what would it hurt to keep them around?

MMA: Tapia Injured, Out of WEC Title Bout

World Extreme Cagefighting has announced that bantamweight challenger Manny Tapia has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled title bout against Miguel Torres at WEC 34 in June:

A knee injury suffered during training camp has forced top bantamweight contender Manny Tapia to withdraw from his June 1st title bout against WEC 135-pound champion Miguel Torres. There is no word as of yet as to how long Tapia will be sidelined, and a suitable replacement opponent for the newly crowned Torres will be announced shortly. The June 1st WEC card at Sacramento’s Arco Arena is headlined by the epic WEC featherweight championship showdown between Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver.

A replacement for the title bout is expected to be officially announced shortly. Currently Faber-Pulver is the only officially announced bout for the event, which will air live on Versus at 9pm.
