The Yankees have to be thrilled with what their money was able to buy them in the offseason. Even though C.C. Sabathia lost Game 1 of the World Series, he was fantastic in his first three postseason start. Plus, there will likely be plenty of time in this World Series for Sabathia to bounce back.

Mark Teixeira earned many of his millions in Game 2. With the Yankees down 1-0 in Game 2 against the Philadelphia Phillies and staring at an 0-2 deficit in the World Series, Teixeira hit a solo shot in the fourth inning to tie the game. His homer seemed to lower the pressure and allow the Yankees to swing with more confidence.

On the mound in Game 2, A.J. Burnett was tremendous. He went seven innings while giving up only one earned run and striking out nine batters. If Burnett gets another start, the Yankees will be confident in his ability to deliver a win.

Yankees Offseason Spending Spree Paying Off

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Twins had a 3-1 lead and set Joe Nathan to the mound — who is one of the best closers in baseball. To begin the inning, Mark Teixeira hit a single. The next batter was Alex Rodriguez, a player with a lackluster history in clutch situations. But that wasn’t the case on Friday night. Rodriguez hit a two-run blast to tie the game.

After surviving a no-out, bases loaded jam in the top of the 11th inning, Teixeira came to the plate in the bottom of the 11th with the score still tied 3-3. The Yankees star first baseman then hit a walk-off homer to push the Yankees to a 2-0 lead over the Twins in the series.

The Yankees will try to end the series on Sunday when Andy Pettitte takes on Carl Pavano.

Yankees Stars Lead New York to Victory

1. Mark Teixeira, New York Yankees
The production the Yankees have got recently from Teixeira makes the franchise look smart for sign him to that mega contract in the offseason. In the last month, he has 25 RBIs, 20 runs and nine homers.

2. Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals
Even though he’s dealt a few nagging injuries as of alte, Pujols remains a monster. There’s no other hitter that pitchers more.

3. Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers
Fielder’s 27 RBIs and on-base percentage of .427 in the last month is extremely impressive. On the season, he’s batting a career-high .302.

4. Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies
Over the last month, Howard has struggled a bit in terms of his batting average and getting on base. But when he connects, he connects. He has ten homers in the last 30 days.

5. Carlos Pena, Tampa Bay Rays
After getting off to a fast start, Pena started to cool off a little bit. But he’s not heating back up. His 21 homers lead the American League.

Hot Fantasy Baseball First Basemen

That homer upped Rodriguez’s batting average to .154 and it was his first homer since his first at-bat. The win took the New York Yankees to 19-17 on the season. With the loss, the Twins dropped to 18-19.

Prior to the big hit by A-Rod, Mark Teixeira was the star for New York. He finished the ballgame 4-for-4 with one walk, two runs and four RBIs. His big hit was a three-run blast in the third inning.

The Twins got solo homers from their two big bats in the lineup – Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. Mauer is now hitting .423 on the season, while Morneau is at .324.

These two teams will play again on Sunday afternoon and Monday night.

Alex Rodriguez Hits Walk-Off Home Run

In 4.1 innings of work, Sabathia gave up eight hits and six earned runs, while walking six batters and not striking out anyone. After shutting out the Orioles over the first two innings, the hefty hurler gave up three earned runs in the bottom of the third and three earned runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Sabathia wasn’t the only high priced bust on opening day. Mark Teixeira, who signed a $180 million deal with the Yankees in the offseason, was 0-4 at the plate and left five runners on base.

For the Orioles, Adam Jones went 3-for-3 with two walks, three runs and two RBIs. Nick Markakis went 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Jeremy Guthrie got the win by allowing three earned runs over six innings.
