UPDATED February 13: The NCAA announced today in a “notice of allegations” that Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson and members of his staff violated numerous telephone recruiting restrictions that were in place because of his previous violations at Oklahoma. The NCAA also indicated that Sampson about it to the school and NCAA investigators. The NCAA listed five major violations against Sampson, claiming that he gave “false or misleading information” to NCAA investigators.

Ladies and gentlemen – if you’ll look out the window to your right, you will see the college coaching career of Kelvin Sampson going up in flames.

If the Indiana athletics department has any class, character or moral compass whatsoever, they should immediately fire Sampson.

Sampson is a habitual cheater. He was busted at Oklahoma for the same type of violations and it is clear that he will not change his behavior. Indiana knew they were taking a chance at hiring Sampson, and now he has violated their confidence and trust.

A head coach should be a basketball team’s example, mentor, and teacher. The only thing that Sampson is teaching Indiana basketball players is how to lie and cheat.

Indiana should fire Kelvin Sampson, and fire him right now.

(Kelvin Sampson) – Yes please – I’d like to place 10 phone calls to some of my basketball recruits and their families please.

(Operator) – Yes sir. The charge for those calls will be $500,000 and one basketball scholarship.

(Kelvin Sampson) – Not a problem. Do you accept VISA or Mastercard?

Now, if you think that conversation is crazy, I suggest you think again.

Indiana University punished head coach Kelvin Sampson for going over the allotted number of phone calls he could make to recruits and their families. Sampson lost his $500,000 bonus, and the basketball team will lose one scholarship.

There are expensive long distance phone bills, and then there is Sampson’s phone bill.

After all the trouble that Sampson caused at Oklahoma, where the Sooners were investigated by the NCAA for recruiting violations, I was surprised that Indiana pursued him so vigorously.

And now they are enjoying the fruits of their labors…

Tuesday October 30th - Rob Senderoff, the assistant basketball coach who assisted Sampson in setting up the questionable phone calls with recruits has formally resigned. I sure hope that IU and Sampson don’t hang Senderoff out to dry by himself. Sampson is ultimately responsible for the actions of both his players and coaches, and if there were indiscretions committed by his coaching staff, he needs to be held accountable.

Sampson will probably get a slap on the wrist, IU will be put on probation and may lose some scholarships, and life will go on.

I’m not sure how many lives Sampson has left, but I would think he is getting close to the end of his allotted “second chances”.
