Ouch.

Earlier today, Hawaii’s Greg McMackin fumbled over some words at the Western Athletic Conference media day, asking the media not to report on something he said. The comment in question? When talking about the Notre Dame and Hawaii banquet before the Hawaii Bowl last year, the coach said that the Irish performed a “little f****t dance” for the Warriors before they performed a traditional Hawaiian greeting dance called a shaka.

Ouch.

Greg McMackin Image: Newscom

McMackin later talked to the media about the statement, saying,

“I want to officially, officially apologize. Please don’t write that statement I said as far as Notre Dame. The reason is, I don’t care about Notre Dame. But I’m not a … I don’t want to come out and have every homosexual ticked off at me. You know what I mean. Because I don’t have any problem with homosexuals. But I apologize for saying that and I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t run that word.”

Fat chance, the reports are all over the place.

So my question for you all: Obviously, what the coach said was derogatory and wrong…but should the reporters have respected his wishes and kept the comment under wraps?

Well, we weren’t there at Super Bowl Media Day like some lucky people. But we wanted to do our part with hype (listen to us, as if we’ve never blogged about the New England Patriots before. Pffft!). So . . . we interviewed someone who had a Tom Brady encounter!

Please welcome Winnie McCarthy of Watching the View as she shares the story of her brush with NFL greatness once upon a time.

GoS: So, you once had a Tom Brady encounter. What’s the scoop?

WM: I had a class with him at University of Michigan, and we were in the same 20-person discussion section. I was surprised how deep his voice was. Very manly.

One day, as we were leaving class, Tom was ahead of me. I may or may not have waited until he left class to follow him. Of course it could have just been coincidence that he was right in front of me. Or fate.

He held the door for me! I said, “Thanks” in a tone just above a whisper. What I really wanted to say was, “Oh my God thank you so much I love football and I love you and can we go somewhere and cuddle and we would just have the cutest babies!!?”

I was a loser though and had to get to my next class, so I didn’t even get to follow him that day. Um, I mean I had to go to class, so we parted ways.

GoS: Did he wink?

WM: I thought he did at first, but I think that the wind had just kicked some dirt into his eye. So close.

GoS: What was he wearing?

WM: He always dressed so nicely in class. Most of the rest of the team would wear sweats and Michigan shirts, but he always wore nice, preppy clothes. I know that day it was a little cold out and he was wearing a navy wool dress coat.

GoS: How was his hair?

WM: Perfect. (Did you really need to ask?)

GoS: Thanks, Winnie. Excuse us, folks, as we pause for the new Pepsi Super Bowl ad. You can also skip the ad a la TiVo and get right to Part II. Then, we’ll finish up the interview and find out whether or not Winnie kissed Tom Brady.

Reporters’ Questions (paraphrased)
1. What makes the Patriots dynasty tick?
2. Does the public perception of you match up with the reality?
3. What will you do when you’re done with the NFL?
4. Will you miss place-kicker Adam Vinatieri, who is a total traitor and went to the Indianapolis Colts made some clutch kicks in past Super Bowls, if the game came down to a field goal?

Belichick’s Responses (direct quotes)

a. ” . . . Maybe I was just born to coach.”

SCORING, based on number of correct answers:

0—You must not follow football. Or if you do, you block out all things Bill Belichick.

1–-You’re like the 2007 Miami Dolphins of Bill Belichick trivia.

2—Meh, we’re still not impressed. Hey, the odds are 50-50 on a coin toss, too.

3—You’re either a Pats fan who puts Bill Belichick on a pedestal OR a Pats-hater with a Belichick voodoo doll.

4—Congratulations! You know Coach’s personality so well, you should celebrate by buying yourself a hoodie!
