Jelena Jankovic is one of my favorite players on the women’s circuit. She’s got a great backhand (an aspect of the game I love), she’s got charisma and energy. Granted, her serve needs a lot of improvement and her lack of mental strength costs her some matches. But I love her game.
ESPN did a story on Jankovic’s style of play and her style of personality. The mental fitness issue. The serve. Hmm…these things sound familiar don’t they? Oh wait, I just mentioned them above. Maybe I need to drop my resume by the ESPN office.

Jankovic is a fighter. She’s gritty, and she’s tough. But she’s not a closer. Not yet. The big moments at finals and semifinals on the big stage, Jankovic can’t bring the goods. Will that come? She’s 23. She could have a lot of years left. Get a bigger serve. Groom some mental toughness.

How you do that, I’m not sure. It’s not like she’s never been in the center ring before, because she certainly has. Maybe she should take a trip to those empty swimming pools where she learned how to play tennis. The wall always returns the ball and you never get a break; it’s a place to start, right?
