Mercedes-Benz B-Class: With more and more people flocking for smaller more fuel-efficient cars many believe that you have to sacrifice your taste for quality and style in order to save the trees. Well I’m here to tell you that there are better alternatives. I mentioned earlier that Europe are the leaders in small cars but did you know about the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz B-Class or (B200)?

2010 Mercedes-Benz B200

The new B200 comes in either the standard 2.0L I4 – 134hp or the sport 2.0L I4 – 194hp turbocharged. Both engines are great on the small car frame and does a good job at passing and regular highway driving. But what makes the B200 remarkable is the list of standard features that make this one of the safest small cars to drive today. The B200 features front, back, side and curtain airbags. The engine is specially mounted to drop if you end up in a head on collision. This helps protect the front passengers from getting pinned. The B200 also has a smart suspension system that will soften up when riding on bumpy terrain but will add extra firm support when making a tight turn so that all four wheels stay planted on the road.

Another cool feature only found on the B200 is the Parabolic Rear Axle. The position of the heavy axles are placed in such a way that the car is always able to maintain a low center of gravity. This comes in hand when using your sporty new car to its fullest potential.

If you are looking for one of the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class B200 check one out at your local Mercedes dealership today or visit their micro-site at Mercedes-Benz.com Expect to pay a starting price of just over $29,000.

It was the icon of luxury in its day and is now a collectible car (or a regular taxi cab in France). The Mercedes-Benz W123 300D was the first car I ever drove, repaired, and tor apart and it will always be a classic example of the durability a good Mercedes-Benz could offer.

Mercedes-Benz W123 300D

The Mercedes-Benz 300D started production in 1976 and made their last car in 1985. Despite this relatively short run and age of the car (between 24 and 33 years old) you can still see the 300D out on the roads today. Diesel engine were still a fairly new idea for North Americans but it was cheaper to buy than gasoline. So when the gas crisis occurred in the late 1970’s many people turned towards the 300D as an alternative.

Anyone who had to drive a diesel car back then will now that the smell of burning sulfur and heavy black smoke was something that took some getting used to. You also had to find a way to get your car started in the cold winter months. The 300D needed to always be plugged in over night to keep the engine warm and the glow plugs had to be primed at least twice before starting the engine.

You also had to get used to the lack of power a 300D could provide. Despite being a luxury car it was no where near as powerful as the regular Chevy, Ford or GM of the time. Compared to the pony cars and heavy sedans the the time, the 300D was kind of that sissy at the playground who always gets picked on cause they never fight back. The engine was big – a 3.0L 5I a feat for diesel engineering in its days but not powerful and could only get you at best 88 hp. The engine may have been weak but it proved to be lasting. When cars normally break down after a few years, the 300D are still going today with some surpassing the 1 million miles mark.

The E-Class comes available in the sedan or coupe models. Both have the optional between the 2.1L I4 Diesel, 3.0L V6 Diesel, 1.8L I4 Turbo-charged, 3.5L V6 & 6.2L V8. So many choices and each one will be able to suite any preference. The E-Class also has an available 7-speed automatic transmission, the only one ever! The transmission of course changes gears by itself and self programs by registering imput from driver habits. So you could say that the E-Class Mercedes is Taylor made for the driver. The transmission is also intelligent and can down shift when going into steep inclines thus reducing break pad overheating or glazing. Which is when the brake pads get so hot they basically melt and become useless.

The E-Class sells at a much higher cost than the Lexus or BMW but let’s face it, nothing beats the status of owning a Mercedes-Benz. The starting price for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is about $57,000.

The GL-Class comes in a variety or available engines like the new Blue Tech Diesel which has a way of cleaning the emissions making whatever comes out of the tail pipe less polluting. The heaviest engine available is the 5.5L V8 that can deliver some heavy class towing ability.

The GL-Class comes with less standard features than their competitors like the Cadillac Escallade and Lincoln Navigator, but it also come at a lesser cost. Starting at $54,000 the GL-Class is an affordable choice for luxury SUV buyers. Also, consider that it is a Mercedes which does rank high as a status symbol.
