I had so much fun coming up with my Top 10 college basketball jerseys and Top 10 Ugliest college basketball jerseys, it started me thinking – I’ve barely scratched the surface here.

The first topic that came to mind is team names. There are lots of cool team names, some mediocre team names, and some absolutely awful team names.

I’m NOT talking about mascots here – I’ll save that for another posting.

So, here is my Top 10 list of the coolest college team names:

#1 – Michigan Wolverines – the perfect name for a sports team. Wolverines are ferocious, nasty and intimidating.

#2 – Alabama Crimson Tide – combine a cool color with the visual of a tide sweeping their opponents away.

#3 – Army Black Knights – these aren’t any ordinary Knights, these are the Black Knights. Dark, mysterious, overpowering. Great name.

#4 – Akron Zips – what’s not to love about a team called the Zips?

#5 – Miami Hurricanes – everybody understands the raw power and energy of a hurricane.

#6 – Hawaii Warriors (formerly Rainbow Warriors) – I was sad when Hawaii dropped the Rainbow from their name. And who isn’t afraid of Warriors?

#7 – St. Johns Red Storm – when the Johnnies changed their name from Redmen to Red Storm, I was all for it. A storm is brewing on the horizon…

#8 – DePaul Blue Demons – I think Demons is a great name for a team, and adding Blue in front of the name adds a little something extra to the mix.

#9 – Arkansas Razorbacks – this is one Hog that you definitely don’t want to mess with.

#10- Nevada Wolf Pack – another great visual – a group of silent, fierce predators stalking their prey.

Top 10 college team names

#1 – Duke – I despise all of their jerseys, but this particular black and blue number is just awful.

#2 – Syracuse – what is the deal with the awful block lettering?

#3 – Kansas State And now, starting at power forward for the Wildcats, from Ronald McDonaldland – GRIMACE!!! And at the other forward spot, Barney the Dinosaur!!!

#4 – Georgetown – there’s nothing like ballin’ in drab, dreary gray unis. Ohio State – combine the dreary gray of Georgetown and the block lettering of Syracuse, and what do you get? An ugly Ohio State jersey.

#5 – Florida State – ugly lettering + garnet/gold = nauseating

#6 – Wake Forest – boring, drab, no personality…just like Tim Duncan.

#7 – Ohio State - take Syracuse’s awful lettering + Georgetown’s dreary gray and you get Ohio State’s gear.

#8 – Oregon – I honestly don’t even know where to begin…

#9 – University of Miami – I’m sorry…that jersey might look good on the football field, but I don’t care for it on the basketball court.

#10 – Northwestern – see #3.

#10a – BYU – as a University of Utah grad, I was required to list BYU on this list somewhere. I never did like Danny Ainge…

Top 10 Ugliest college basketball jerseys

Miami Hurricanes guard Adrian Thomas will miss the rest of the season after injuring a ligament in his left knee. This is the second year in a row that Thomas has suffered an early season-ending injury, as he suffered an abdominal injury four games into last season.

Louisville Cardinals center David Padgett suffered a fractured right knee cap and is out for the year. Padgett is the Cardinals best low-post player and his loss will drastically hurt the Cardinals chances at winning the NCAA title this season.

UAB point guard Paul Delaney III tore the ACL in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season. Delaney was UAB’s leading scorer last season.
