What Are Your Twitter Tips

PCMag.com currently has an article titled “Top 10 Twitter Tips for Beginners“. I was eager to read the article to see if there was anything really helpful. Perhaps it’s the “…for Beginners” that I should focus on, as these things don’t seem so much as tips as basic instructions.

Here’s what they listed as their tips:

Shrink Your URL’s
RT = Retweet
Direct Messaging
Use the @ Sign
Search For Your Friends
Categorize Your Tweets for Added Exposure
Share Pictures
Tweet from Your Phone
Pick a Good Desktop Client
Download a Mobile Client

Maybe you agree with me and think these are more instructions and not real “tips”. What tips would you suggest for people? Here are a couple of mine to get you started:

Tweet First, Follow Later – at least have a few tweets in your history before you start following more than a handful of people. People won’t follow you unless they can see what you’re talking about
Update Your Avatar – give yourself a personality and let us see who you are or put an image with your tweets. It makes following you and recognizing you much easier as you tweet
Complete Your Profile – more details about who you are will convince me to follow you or not

Playing Around w/ Destroy Twitter

I’ve been playing around with the Destroy Twitter client today and overall have been enjoying the experience. I had looked at it before but decided against it because they couldn’t do multiple account names like I have in twhirl. The interface change to Destroy Twitter to get me to really try it again was the addition of groups management.

The interface changes and user-interface is really slick. It’s developed on the Adobe Air platform, like twhirl, so it’s a very light installation package. Destroy Twitter still doesn’t have multi-account ability and the interface for adding individuals to groups could be improved to make it easier as well.

One of the features that’s really great though is the auto-complete feature for the people you’re following. As soon as I start typing @ for a username, a mini dialog box appears and starts limiting the followers that match the characters I begin typing.

Quickly accessing your stream of follower updates, or replies, or direct messages are all very easy and the display panels elegantly slide into view from various sections of the application.

I’ve still got twhirl installed to manage my other twitter accounts until Destroy Twitter catches up on that function. Then I’ll love it completely and probably uninstall twhirl. That is unless twhirl develops something to put it back in front of the others.

The Hitler parody subtitles meme, which has been around the block so many times it actually iterated on itself, now gets applied to Twitter.

From Xbox to HDDVD to Twitter, this meme seems to work particularly well on just about any tech topic. Clearly, there’s a lot to rage about in tech. Wait ’til he hears that 4chan’s down.
